Ok, this one might be oddly specific, but I hope I can find some like minded anons.

Basically I want a 2D action game/platformer that lets me grind like motherfucker, but doesn't actually require it to beat the main story.

Not necessary a metroidvania, it can be a game with levels and world map or dungeon crawler or whatever, but as long as it has levels and gear and optional content for me to grind for I'm in.

I'll post some that I'm already sick of:

>Igavanias

>Shaman King on GBA

>Monster Tale on NDS

>Valdis Story

>Earth's Dawn

To contrast games like Super Metroid and Hollow Knight don't have any grinding in them, so once you've explored everything and beat the story, there is nothing else to do.

Obviously online skinner boxes and mobile shit not allowed.

>Hollow Knight doesn't have grinding

it has some, namely for journal entries or for geo when you're running low

I mean it's more of exploration thing, once you have all upgrades you don't need geo for anything ever, right? And most of them you don't even buy.

In metroid you can also find additional upgrades for missiles and health, but it's not the same as going into some level and farming mobs for exp and drops like you can do in SOTN or Shaman King.

Come to think of it Valdis Story is kinda more on Hollow Knight side too, but whatever.

Shining Soul II is basically grinding: the GBA game

>you virtually need the stats from grinding to deal damage/survive attacks from advanced mode monsters

>you need to grind random unidentified loot for good armor pieces unless you want to get fucked by either physical attacks or spells (or both)

>you need to grind random ore drops from chests to get materials to make the truly good gear

>8 save slots and 8 character classes to grind

Oh I played that. It was meh, but I spent a lot of time on it.

Good suggestion for those who didn't.

Mega Man Battle Network games have some fun grinding if you want the rare chip drops, but you're essentially free to progress the story at your own pace, since there isn't any real concept of EXP.

I didn't like the combat system.

It's some weird tile-based real time rock-paper game that just doesn't click with me

Did you try mmbn network transmission on the gamecube? It has the chip farming and such but is actually a normal mega man 2d platformer, more or less anyway.

I still have no idea why Capcom decided to release one of the last Wonderswan games ever produced for a series they were making games for on the GBA.

A bit of an off suggestion, Klonoa: Dream Champ Tournament might work, since it has a level ranking system that can feel a bit grindy since you have to beat each stage without getting hit to max it out.

Alternatively,

You might prefer Summon Knight Swordcraft 1+2+3(Three is jap only)

All three are RPG's with a side-scrolling battle system where you craft your own weapons. In 2 especially, since the same items you use to craft your weapons can also be used to enhance or add special actions/ attacks.

My big pet peeve about that game is the way enemy spells work. They're the player spells in every way - including size. In later levels you encounter swarms of very durable enemies that cast spells that take up like 1/4 of the room, so that it's either take out most of them in a quick go or get shat on and die/get forced around a corner to play the waiting game by constant death spell spam. Dodging just isn't an option against a max level ice, blast, or lightning spell.

Why couldn't they have highly damaging spells but with fair hitboxes?

Boost jump to kill a boss in one hit. Alternately, you can let Draygon capture you, and use the grapple beam to grab the destroyed turrets that are spewing high voltage, and fry the both of you. Or do it the slow, "normal" way.
