post the most obscure Playstation game you've played and actually enjoyed
doesn't have to be a "hidden gem," just something that you can have fun with.
pic related, for me. it might be shovelware and fundamentally broken when it comes to its weird take on 1v1 mahjong mechanics, but it's comfy as fuck.

Don't know if this is obscure, but I never see anyone talking about it. The controls take some getting used to, since I think a lot of people expect the gliding to feel like Spyro, but it doesn't give you nearly as much range. Aside from that (not that I think it's actually bad once you get used to it), it's a great 3D platformer with a very charming atmosphere. I love this halloween type stuff. Medieval gets a lot of talk, but even when this was first released, I was the only person I knew who was aware of it.

from what I gather it's sort of like competitive Qix, right?
in which case I suggest Anchor Field Z (Anchorz Field) for the WonderSwan, which has similar territory-based gameplay except you control a harpoon-wielding tank instead of an egg.
graphics have chunky as shit but there's a solid and tactical game behind the rough appearance.

Criminally underrated. First person platforming. I'm really disappointed that while many games copied the Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot styles of 3D platforming, none really copied this one. Not to mention its really charming visual style. And for such an early first party PS game that was clearly intended to be a major mascot for the PlayStation brand. I really wish Sony would bring it back, but they didn't even mention it in PS All-Stars. Had to save room for Bioshock I suppose.

They are quite short. Very early PS1 titles so I imagine a lot of the work just went into getting them to work, though they were spirtual sequels to a game by the same devs called Geograph Seal on the X86000. There actually is a surprising amount of secret content if you look for it, but even with that, once you know how to get it, you'll still be able to beat the entire game 100% in one sitting. it essentially amounts to a Hard Mode which continues the story, then a mode where you have extra moves, and a hard mode with the extra moves. The sequel has some hidden objectives that make you want to go back and replay stuff though.
There's also a third Jumping Flash! that was only released in Japan. I really should get around to playing it.

whether it's worth the time and effort is up to each person, but for me it was absolutely a good investment. now the main barrier to playing untranslated games isn't waiting for some lazy ass to finish patching it, but my personal skill with the language. makes me feel more in control of shit.

I wonder why NISA feels the compulsion to gut and ruin perfectly decent games.
plus, from a quick search it doesn't look like the Japanese version of the DS remake has the issues and crashes of the NA release. wouldn't surprise me if NISA pulled a Disgaea and wrecked the game's stability in the process of localizing. honestly, how is it possible to fuck up this badly multiple times?
>>14721781
that's the hump, it's normal. you know enough runes that you're not completely skipping over every single dialogue, but not enough that you're fluently reading it like English.
my advice is to keep playing games; you'll start to catch on to common terms and phrases that games of your preferred genre use. maybe try out some kid-friendly games on DS; they'll have furigana for more complex terms (like "equip," "upgrade"), if not written totally in kana.
it gets better, trust me

They also removed bonus content from it that acted as calls-forward to the sequels, because we never got them here.
>plus, from a quick search it doesn't look like the Japanese version of the DS remake has the issues and crashes of the NA release.
Either they cannot into QA bugtesting, don't listen to testers/fix what testers find, or don't even QA to begin with, considering how many games they handle wind up broken to some degree. There's also the factor that other company will send scripts to the original developers to insert since the developers (ideally) understand the code and how not to break shit/better fix it, and I suppose they don't do that either.
>honestly, how is it possible to fuck up this badly multiple times?
Because one of the few things they manage to do that other companies need to learn from is that niche games tend to get niche sales figures, and that that's alright. However, because they operate off that, they can still turn enough profit to have stuck around the last 15 years and continually abuse games (and anime too). Granted, some of that isn't even sales of games they touch the scripts or code for; some companies like TK leave fans of their games between a rock or a hard place at times due to making LE only physical releases and then mooching off NISA's store instead of making their own or just selling on Amazon. Also that they used to act as PAL publishing for games handled in NA by the likes of XSEED, Atlus (in the past anyhow; if memory serves Atlus broke them off after Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir), etc.
The fact that NISA also has a lengthy list of games on their resume also likely gives Japanese companies a feeling that they know what they're doing, at least at first glance. Similar with 8-4 having a list of some 93 games they've handled (some of those are admittedly English exports to other languages), though I assume that they're more expensive than NISA.

Everyone I knew just called it the PlayStation. We also never called Super Nintendo "SNES," and NES was just "Nintendo" and later "the original Nintendo." "Sega" and "Genesis" were interchangeable, because nobody ever heard of the Master System, and even later, names like Game Gear, Saturn, and Dreamcast were different enough, and not as important enough culturally, that those just used their actual names and "Sega" still meant Genesis, though Genesis was also a good enough name that that there was no confusion there, like there was with "Nintendo" and "Super Nintendo."
PS1 was never used until they released that small version of it, and that was marketed as "PSOne." It was only years later I saw the "One" being turned into a "1."

I'm English first, Japanese second. I personally find English best for moderate-density text, like news articles or instruction manuals. Japanese is much more optimized for low-density casual conversation or high-density infodumps (e.g. in-game HUDs, charts)
7eaf7f No.14725784

Games were intentionally over-localized then, too, arguably further than now, in some cases. Not only did you have the elimination of anything sexy, but also any religious references, anything considered too violent, and anything involving alcohol. Things considered too Japanese would get changed, like many of the bosses in Dynamite Headdy. And that's not including games that were all but completely changed for a different market, like Magical Hat into Decap Attack.

My favorite example is how Puyo Puyo was localized as Kirby's Avalanche in North America and Kirby's Ghost Trap in Europe, years after it was already localized in those regions as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
Also, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for NES removed a whole level from the Japanese version and just had you do another level twice instead. Don't know what the reason could possibly be for that, but surely it's because those wacky japanese just made something that western audiences could never possibly understand.
