Finished playing Max Payne. Bullet time was a fun mechanic but the save whenever you want system doesn’t suit this game well. If you save every time you clear a room the game becomes an easy grind to finish each level. I tried to fix this issue by only using auto saves. The game started to annoy me because of the general unpredictability of the game. E.g. Grenade surprises, enemy accuracy. Pic 2 related. Played like that up until the level where you are tied up and lose all your weapons. I made it to the fight against Frankie Niagara a few times but died every time he starts to bum-rush. In general, the boss fights were my least favorite part of the game. Bullet sponges aren’t fun to play against and the consistent strategy against Frankie is to not kill everyone else in the bar so he doesn’t bum-rush you. Most bosses have other weird behaviors including one that becomes invincible if you bait him out of his starting area.
I didn’t enjoy the story much either. It was a cliché, but it seems that was the intended design. Not big into the action movies the game took inspiration from. The characters look’s in the graphic novel portion didn’t fit their roles. Vinnie was the goofiest looking character. Pic 3 related.
For those that enjoyed the game what did you like about it?

Would you say you didn't like the way the show started?
Love MP. Didn't find the second or the third as good(particularly the third). I love games where you're constantly switching weapons to what's the most effective or fun according to the situation(for example in Frankie's fight a Molotov works wonders). Also a note, strafing and pressing jump has you rolling, which either has an assload of iframes or makes your hitbox tiny and you can use it to get into and out of position better. To me it really helps against the savescumming because you don't need it. Truthfully if I had one gripe against Max Payne it would be the two nightmare levels, they were a nice trip and all but they kill the momentum of repeat playthroughs. I like the music, I love the action, the charm of the mobsters and the rough graphics, the cheesy voice acting, it's all missing in MP2(as well as difficulty) and MP3 feels like some dumbass of a movie director decided to make a game because his career was failing.

scripted ≠ predictable
Having a grenade thrown at you feet can be scripted doesn't mean it won't catch me off guard the first time and feel like a cheap death. Furthermore I specified enemy accuracy as being unpredictable.

I agree with you there. Weapon variety was pretty good. Jackhammer appearing was a nice touch to the general action movie theme.

The gunplay is really satisfying. Sending someone flying will always be more fun than just having them awkwardly tumble down.
This is what made Max Payne 3 less fun for me. I wanted more John Woo style shootouts, but instead they gave me "realism".

If you're new to Max Payne
PROTIP: Avoid Max Payne 3
Noire feel is gone. Humor of 1 & 2 is gone. Comic page intros, gone. MP3 is like when Hollywood takes a recognizable character and puts them into something that has completely lost any spirit of what they once were just to have idiots fill the seats thinking "I'll go see that because I recognize it!" The airport sequence at the end is the only good part of MP3. Still, anyone telling you it's worth playing is lying to you. Stick to Max Payne 1 & 2 or you're going to be disappointed.

I like the gameplay mechanics and the engine ran great back in the day when it was new. The Kung Fu mod was the bees knees. Also seeing Future Crew (demoscene group) transform into Remedy and make a AAA video game in 2001 was pretty fucking sweet as I was huge into the demoscene in the 90s.

I hate that the shotgun is so dangerous to use in this game. Because of dynamic difficulty, you can't even rely on it to kill an enemy at point-blank range. It's pistols and automatics or nothing in may payne and that fucking sucks.
Still a better game better than the sequel, though. I think MP2 just has less…character, somehow, it's not as unique. Hard to explain. Maybe it give me too many alan wake vibes.

the higher difficulties are only unlocked after repeated playthroughs. Pretty bad idea to have it work like that. The game generally benefits from having less saves. As is it's easy as fuck to just save scum through it, but that's a common problem with PC games. It's hard to talk about though because then you get idiots crying about how it's a superior feature despite it making games easier.

To unlock Dead on Arrival you need to beat the game on Fugitive then on Hard Boiled. Then it limits your saves to 7 per chapter. Seems kinda generous until the third act.

I found use in shot guns when enemies were waiting to ambush from behind a corner. After jumping in the Sawed-off seemed more reliable when you knew there was just one enemy but less against two. I think it does more damage. Also the pump-action seemed to drop enemies faster than a single Beretta. Early on it proved more useful but they become obsolete for most of the game until the Jackhammer. Also the best strategy I found was left turning corners and the single Beretta. You inch your right hand just past the corner and take out enemies while only exposing your arm. Its how I killed most enemies.

The storyline to Max Payne is great. It's really goofy and keeps your attention throughout. It also has really good pacing and memorable characters. I remembered all of the names of every single character in both Max Payne 1/2 because they were so memorable 15-ish years after I played it.

You have to kill ALL of the enemies that are attacking you before that cutscene triggers. It's probable that one is stuck somewhere. You have to restart the level.

>saving issue
I don't see quicksaving as an issue. It existed in almost every action game at the time. You could easily make the same argument towards other games like STALKER or Half-Life ("Quicksaving is at odds with these games because you can just quicksave and beat all the fights in the game easily. In STALKER's case it even makes the game easier because the AI bugs out when you quickload"). What quickloading more does is it reduces the amount of frustration that comes from having to replay large parts of levels. (like imagine having to do the elevator shaft with the lasers again because you died). It's really up to the player if he chooses to abuse the mechanic. I'd go as far as to say if the game didn't have quicksaving it would be more of an issue due to how many times the player can instantly die. It's similar to how the original Far Cry is significantly more frustrating than it should be because it doesn't have quicksaving. The most popular mod for that game was one that modded it in.
While I dislike that the game locks off Dead on Arrival I didn't find it much of an issue as Regedit can modify the game to unlock it. Additionally the game is already really hard as it is. (So much so that the general complaint I hear from people is more that the game is too hard especially in Part 3. It was one of the reasons why MP2 is much easier as they made it so bullet time regenerates and enemies drop painkillers). The point I'm trying to make is the game, at vanilla, has a solution to the problem you're describing if you really want the game to be harder.

From what I remember about Half-Life playing with just autosaves isn't overly frustrating. Although its has been awhile since I've played it. In STALKER I don't see it as an equivalent comparison. In STALKER combat comes in short pockets for the most part. Saving after combat doesn't feel excessive since you do other stuff between combat. Max Payne is almost all combat save for extra story bits. I agree with you when you say there is frustration when you have to replay large bits of game to get back to where you were. I just find it devoid of gratification from challenges when I have to arbitrarily decide how much saving is too much. Your point that you can unlock Dead on Arrival through modification is fair. The game has some other problems like lacking widescreen support and sound issues. I certainly was willing to use mods to these issues. There is still an issue that when I started playing I didn't foresee being dismayed by the saving system. When it comes to Dead on Arrival I don't see it as a total solution to my problem. Seven saves across all chapters results in some being too generous with saves. I believe an ideal solution would minimize any time not spent in combat and have shorter chapters/autosave points during chapters.
