This tbh, people want to relive some kind of experience they think they had as a child but completely forgot that they didn't notice it as a child. I played a genesis on a crt tv as a kid and only really noticed the difference when I upgraded to a computer monitor years later. To say "Ahh, I remember when games looked like this" is a false nostalgic feeling since no one who played video games on their original platform and a crt TV had no frame of reference for what they're looking at.

Nope, just pointing out that CRT filters are mostly retarded aside from maybe trying to emulate the color reproduction of them as different models and manufacturers handled displaying color differently. Emulating shit like scanlines, overscan, screen curvature distortion, and composite color bleed is fucking stupid and people who do so need to be shot. If you want that shit ruining the image, then go get a shitty Zenith lying on the side of street to fuel your nostalgia hipster posturing.

They are pointless.
If you put CRT tv right in front of your face it will hurt your eyes just as much as filter, but if you sit at least 2 meters away, as supposed to, then you won't see the difference between CRT, filter or raw square pixels.
If your only option is modern display - you either play shit unfiltered or with SLIGHT bilinear blur, not full on screen vaseline smearing.

5118f5 No.14709327

Only really worthwhile if it really emulates each line of the scan and most shaders don't. Shaders with signal interference/color bleeding (ie. NTSC/PAL shaders) are more important to emulate old pixel art/3d games as a lot of pixel art techniques to create transparency effects or smears on both sprites and textures relied on that and are lost if you play the game unfiltered in a LCD display.
But best is to just play on a CRT, those things are ridiculously cheap after all.

> I absolutely hated the glass curve which gave me headaches
well that's a new one. Weird to see people raised on flat panels.
Every time I've seen CRT shaders they mostly seem to simulate how CRTs work on a surface level. All the software in the world and it'll never capture the inherent pros and cons of a CRT display. It can show the image from them but it'll still have the usual LCD flaws of garbage black levels and a more washed out image, simply because a single dot arrangement does not have the same short comings as your average LCDs 8-bit LED arrangement.

That's, of course, why the disparity between 8:7 and 4:3 exists on the Super Nintendo, right? All those circles that appear as ovals, of course, were intentional because that's how it appeared on the CRT TVs back then, right?
Surely the image was supposed to look like absolute cancer because that's how it looked on the only widespread and affordable displays at the time.
I mean, it's not like some of those same developers have made new modern games reusing those same old assets, and not rubbed vaseline all over the display. Were they supposed to look blurred back then and are supposed to look clear and sharp now? Or maybe, just maybe, it was a limitation of the technology readily available at the time, and the sprite artists of the time were working on PC stations with the assets closely zoomed in and meticulously laying down pixel by pixel?
Sure, some games relied on how the assets would show up on CRT displays. Most, however, did not.

The SNES has non-square pixels. The "issue" regarding its aspect ratio only applies to LCDs which cannot display non-square pixels.
>I mean, it's not like some of those same developers have made new modern games reusing those same old assets, and not rubbed vaseline all over the displays
That's because they're cheap and lazy.
>it was a limitation of the technology readily available at the time, and the sprite artists of the time were working on PC stations with the assets closely zoomed in and meticulously laying down pixel by pixel?
What's this crock of shit supposed to prove? They zoomed in because it was easier to draw that way. You're mad if you think it's because they intended everyone to view the same mammoth-sized pixels.
>Sure, some games relied on how the assets would show up on CRT displays. Most, however, did not.
No, they all did. You're pissing retarded if you believe they weren't working on making their games look best on display technology that had been around and refined for nearly a century. LCDs didn't take over because they're superior, they took over because they're cheaper to produce and ship.
