I played it when it was brand new and getting my config.sys and autoexec.bat all lined up was a big pain in the ass. I managed to beat it without encountering any show stoppers.
It was the last Ultima, 8 with the jumping puzzles bored me (even though they later fixed that) and 9 was just completely fucked from the get-go. Now Garriott's off on his Shroud of the Avatar thing where you get to pay him for real estate in an unfinished game, but hey there's wood turning and pottery to be done.

Never could get into Ultima. Having to fit some predisposed role like the avatar is pretty shitty role playing in my opinion. The lore is also quite boring and so are the characters., which unfortunately reoccur in pretty much every title.
The combat style is also not something I prefer either. I always preferred Wizardry over Ultima, even though a single Ultima title brings a lot more to the table than all but three of the main Wizardry games as far as world building, Wizardry's races/classes/combat has always been superior.

I played U7 on release. It had one of the most dick-snapping bugs I've run into in a game. Whenever you slept, one key in your inventory would randomly be lost. Given you had like a hundred fucking keys you'd probably not notice this until you hit a wall. I got to the very end of the game only to discover I didn't have the key I needed and none of my saves were before the key was lost. gg. I did eventually come back to it and replay and finish it.
It was easily the best RPG I ever played.

Sorry, Torfag, but you're wrong. Dead wrong. Ultima 8 is where it's at. Forget the fact that it's the buggiest, most unplayable installment in the Ultima series. Also take no account of the fact that the game was unfinished.
Ultima 8 was the true predecessor of everything we know as open world today, and would have been the crown jewel of the genre if the game weren't shipped out in its unplayable, broken state.
And all of the kinks aside, it had very deep, rich character development and a feeling of true immersion.
It was also the game that broke me in good as a hoarder. I picked up every mug, plate, skull, and other piece of clutter that I came in contact with and even assembled a collection of barrels in the center of Tenebrae to hold it all. This is why I've always laughed at Skyrim hoarders and their barrels and chests full of skulls. I'm all like, "Hahaa stupid faggot. Didn't you learn not to hoard back in the days of Ultima 8? Oh wait… you never fucking played it lmao!"
Love Ultima 8 and the OST as well.

Ultima VIII had some interesting ideas and a good attempt at a more-oppressive atmosphere, and has a decent framework/foundation for a good sequel to VII, but that doesn't excuse the fact that it was woefully-unfinished, had an incoherent plot, and had all the shitty platforming sections that are far-removed from Ultima. Good concept, awful execution. In some ways I'd say it's even worse than IX, which is a mediocre, below-average game on its own but fucking fails at everything the other games got right.

That's not how you spell point&click adventure. But seriously, Ultima VII is just a sandbox for you to goof around with: go somewhere, drag some shit around, stack it to build makeshift stairs, bake some bread, or watch a guy go about his day. It must have been really cool back in the day, but the gimmick gets old real quick. The gameplay is pure torture: your companions are on autopilot and suicidal, inventory management has been designed with the sole purpose of pissing me off, and the game never gives you any stats.

Watch the Spoony videos if you care about the story and don't torture yourself with the first three games. U3 is decent enough, but the first two were Garriot throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. Incidentally, the first two were published by other companies, and the third one was the first game Origin published.

Too bad Wizardry is full of elitists bullshit. No, saving before a battle that's going to level you up and reloading if you get the wrong random stat increases is not hardcore, it's just a waste of my time. Luckily the developers did not put any obfuscation into the save file, so it's easy to re-allocate stats in a hex editor.

All of the numbered ones are good. The first three are super basic but they have aged very well compared to the first three Ultima games. Wizardry 4 is arguably the most difficult RPG ever created. 5 and 6 are top tier dungeon crawlers. 7 is the easiest game in the series, though still difficult compared to most other RPGs, and is also the first one to have an overworld. 1-3 and 6-8 let you play as the same party all the way through. In 4 you play as the villain from the first three games and most of the enemies are player-made parties taken from copies that customers sent to Sir-Tech for repair.
