What did you think about the tone shift from Jak and Daxter to Jak II?

9dc56f No.14666723

>>14666693

>Daxter to Jak II

is that the one that he just fucking says he is going to kill the bad guy?

Never give your silent protagonist voiced lines.

It was a mistake by a company in its adolescence that it still has yet to recover from.

c68d41 No.14666847

Jak 2 was still a great game.

I know th change is there, but I never gave a fuck since even the humor is still there and better presented. For example, in the infamous line of "I'm gonna kill Praxis", Daxter asks Jak to say something even though he knows he is silent, and then he suddendly talks. To this day I still think that's comedy gold.

The change was pretty well done. Firstly you're introduced with Jak's voice wanting to kill someone, then guns, and finally, when you actually get to do some Jak and Daxter stuff, you simply can't and you realize you're in a fucking post-apocalyptic future with your old house being burned to death except it's confuding because you find the young version of your old mentor, which was a nice touch too

All in all, the game is not even that edgy the winner for that is the last line of Mizo in Jak X and Jak's following line for what is it and everything it involvescheck 2:20. It's overall really fun and lighthearted even with those little edgy parts.

e5e43e No.14666904

There is literally nothing wrong with edgy Jak.

Who is that actor? Is the same guy from Home Alone?

83f235 No.14666928

I get that Naugthy Dog, unlike Fluffy B, have found success in following trends, but I'll always be a little sour about it. I think what keeps me from hating Jak 2 & 3 is the controls. Unlike Nuts N bolts, Jak still plays like himself. The missions and level design changed, but the core gameplay carried over.

725f28 No.14666940

>>14666928

But people hated the jak 2 shift and swore off the series right there.

I remember as a kid I thought it was extremely strange, and didn't't care for it. Game was still fun though. Was it ever explained why he started talking?

>>14666850

JakX was pretty fun from what I remember, only game I improve of with a spinoff racing game.I remember the save game bug to where a certain point of the game, the save file gets corrupted if you use autosave, don't remember if you could even disable it. I was always angry when it happened

I dislike it. The setting and tone of the first game was unique, at least more unique than another generic futuristic dystopia, and they could have built on it to turn it into something really interesting. Also Daxter's character clashes with the tone of the second, and to a lesser extent the third, game in my opinion. I could overlook all of that, however, if the gameplay didn't change so much after the first game. Jak and Daxter was a fantastic platformer, arguably the next evolution of the Crash Bandicoot formula, and Jak II was a GTA clone with occasional platforming sections.

I like the new overworld and remember the racing minigame being quite frustrating. I was young so I didn't really care about the story.

>Was it ever explained why he started talking?

My guess is the experiments pushed him to the point he started to talk.

>JakX was pretty fun

It is. The mechanics and physics are really fucking fun and you actually feel the pressure of the cars and the speed if the races weren't as fucking easy when you had all the stats in a car

90ce06 No.14667251

The toneshift was unexpected and undesired, but not wholly unwelcome

The darker story is tinged with optimism, as the resistance genuinely believes they can make shit better instead of the bogstandard fight the power for fighting the power's sake motivation they could have gone with.

And the whole thing draws quite a bit of inspiration from Star Control, and that's always welcome

Jak II is retard hard, like not actually hard but hard for retarded and kids. Without Jak II and Jak 3, we wouldn't have Jak X the best fucking game that isn't Jak and Daxter.

e78d3c No.14667312

The shift was rather akward but doesnt really make the game worse for me, the second one has much more going for it and isnt a short and frustrating experience like the first one.

One playthrough as a kid and now as an adult feels to be enough for the first but I feel like I could play the second one maybe once or twice more after I finish my second run.

6b9126 No.14667340

I was a dumbo and didn't realize the meta reasons behind 1 to 2, so I didn't give much of a shit about that. Narratively, I didn't mind it so much because they actually fit the change pretty well into the overarching story and the genre of the game didn't change hard enough to cause dissatisfaction from that angle either. Also I was in the full swing of my teenage years. Edge was whatever.

All in all I didn't mind it one bit and think the overall series is slightly stronger for it.

When you have like a thousand actors whos special trick is to look like a shriveled ballsack for that gritty look of mafia movies or bad guys from kids movies I feel confident to call them dime a dozen.

Did it ever say he couldn't talk? I could have swore there was a gag where Jak was about to speak only for Daxter to interrupt. Though I could be thinking of another game.

7114d0 No.14667510

>>14667472

No, I think you're right. I remember a gag like that too. So yeah, it's not that Jak couldn't talk, it's just that he didn't.

7114d0 No.14667543

>>14667133

Can you talk more about Daxter's tone in the first game versus the second? I was playing these games in my early teens so, I don't know if this excuses me or not but I just never really paid much attention to "tone". I saw Jak 1 as a colourful platformer and Jak 2 as a different kind of fun game. Only on the internet did I discover people talk about "pacing". How "well-paced" a story is and even then, it's not really something I'm able to easily detect (not without intense concentration anyway but if I'm using my mind like that then I'm not really having fun anymore).

>Durr what is tone!????

Don't kid yourself. You didn't grow up. You're still a retard.

a591de No.14667680

>>14667582

Re-read my post. I asked him to talk more about Daxter's tone, not the game's tone. Something that would require paying attention to the behaviour of the characters. I listed my acknowledgement of Jak 1's colourful tone and Jak 2's different tone in order to highlight the shallowness of my perception.

I'm looking for an analysis that would use the more subtle nuances in Daxter's behaviour to come to an interesting comparison.

a591de No.14667691

>>14667582

Actually, scratch that. I just re-read his post. He didn't say that he thought Daxter's tone in the second game clashes with his tone in the first game. He just said that Daxter's tone clashes with the second game's tone. Even if Daxter is meant to be comic relief, he just doesn't like it. This was all a waste. Sorry.

I can only think of the opposite of what you're asking and say Saints Row where they wanted to be a GTA clone but wound up not taking things seriously at all.
