fc9006 No.14664908

The gambling authority in the Netherlands has declared that some forms of lootboxes are gambling. Ten popular games were researched, and four of them are in violation in gambling law.

If the randomized rewards of the lootboxes can be sold to other users (for real currency), then they're considered to be items of value. This also applies if the items are being sold on third parties not affiliated with the developer/publisher.

The developer/publishers of the four violating games are given up to 8 weeks to fix their shit. After that they will be given fines and/or sale may be prohibited.

The games researched are not officially named by the gambling authority, but news sites seem to claim that the four violating games are FIFA 18, Dota 2, PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds and Rocket League.

And TF2 or Payday 2 don't fit the bill?

Best case scenario is that the publishers just change their lootboxes globally because they're lazy, worst case is that they only block lootbox trading for the Netherlands with some half-measure and the rest of the world won't really care.

Because you can trade them, the items have economic value. Players can earn money by [opening a chest to] obtain a rare item. Because of that they are in violation with gambling law.

Although I'm not sure about other companies, Valve has done fuck all to stop third party gambling sites.

They only started sending C&D's to third party sites recently because they were threatened with legal action.

>This is a slippery slope waiting to happen where trading and any kind of random drop in any game is taken out because you'll always find the means to sell anything you own.

I think that's still quite a few steps away. Before we get there, lootbox cancer will have to be completely purged first.

An unregulated free market doesn't work, and this industry is proof of it. The only way it could work is if everyone was intelligent and principled, but that is obviously not the case. To defend a free market is to defend the extreme kikery that goes on in the video game industry, with things that used to be part of the default package being sold for many times more than the (now raised) default price. Can't blame this on some vague regulations forcing people to do this either, nothing's forcing people to be hyper kikes.

Instead of trying to maintain a "free" market that kikes will just abuse, we should be working on creating good regulations to stop jewery.
