In tabletop RPGs, usually puting a hindrance on the players is done with the explicit purpose of giving them extra XP. The metagaming around this is even encouraged in some cases (don't remember in which game, but the DM could place a "coin/bead/whatever you were using to mark action points" in front of the player and say something like "your character slips and falls" and you could either take it and try and overcome your hindrance, or just say"nah it doesn't happen" but tehn you don't get taht point).
That being said, unless these peculiar mods bring at least some minimal in-game effect, like "gain +10% more affinity with that weapon", they are just going to be forgotten within a couple months.
Unless the cosmetic effect they cause is so flashy it's actually appealing (none of which were showed so far), because some people really take fashionframe that seriously.

The Bungo situation is quite different. Activision believed in Bungie and Destiny, they gave them a ton of money but at the end of the day it's Bungo who fucked everything up. They admitted not so long ago that they chose to go full microtransactions in D2 because they thought that it was too hard to create new story content for each expansion/DLC. Bungo has hired the wrong people at every level. They re-wrote the lore, changed the characters (every D2 character act sarcastically, like it they were written by Whedon). When people asked the writers why they fucked up the lore, they get blocked (it happened to one youtuber who used to make Destiny lore videos).
