So I modded this piece of shit. I never really got into it's library as much as I should have because I only owned a Wii in the 7th gen, so let's have a thread about it. I seem to have missed a lot of great games. I've been enjoying Deadly Premonition (the PC port crashes too much) and Project Diva a whole shitload. Anybody else still holding onto this thing?

I've used it to play PS1 games, but unless you have the og ps3 with special hardware to emulate ps2 games, it's a console for ps3 but with weaker multi-plats.

Still got mine. Glad they finally cracked the super slim–my B/C original died an ignoble death one year

The PS4 and XBONE still don't have 5 games I want to play, so that leaves me more or less in gen 7

If you haven't played it, give Valkyria Chronicles a try. Gameplay-wise its an interesting combo of TPS and Tactics RPGS. Storywise, a fantasy WW2 with waifus

you might also enjoy LittleBigPlanet 1&2 (haven't played 3 so I won't vouch for it) and the R&C Future games

You could consider playing red dead redemption if you never did, since it never came out for newer consoles. Also, Ni no Kuni is a pretty good JRPG, though a bit for a younger audience. Also, the Metal Gear Solid games games are pretty good, and the 4th one is a PS3 exclusive so give those a try if you like.

What model and roughly how much would you pay for a ps3?

I'm aware of issues that might need fixing like repasting the cpu or it'll fucking die, and needing to get a new hard drive.

Mine was stolen months ago and frankly I'm getting annoyed at the shelf of "Games I can't play because sony are shitheads and the PS4 has no backwards compatibility even though it should since it's more than capable of software emulation of ps1 games, and probably ps2 games, and at the very least should be able to run some ps3 games

You could look into Uncharted if you like fun, Indiana Jones-esque adventure stories. The shooting segments range from tiresome to frustrating and it's as linear as a game can be, but it makes that up in presentation. The characters are likeable and the story is well-told for the most part. As far as cinematic games go, this is a good one. And, as I've said, it's a fun adventure story. They don't really make these anymore.

>would you recommend any good local multiplayer games

I'm the anon you were asking to. Here's all the couch coop I tried:

Abyss Odyssey (hard metroidvania with nice art)

Army of Two (average tps)

Borderlands and sequels

COD4 and sequels

Dead Space Extraction (lightgun, pretty good)

De Blob 2 (kids love it)

Deathspank and sequels (diablo lite by ron gilbert)

Dead Nation (overhead zombie shooter, but extremely polished)

Diablo 3 (best version of the game, only one with offline and couch coop, unfortunately lacks necromancer)

Dragon's Crown (great art but limited gameplay)

Dynasty Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate (there's a dozen of these games, this the best)

Entwined (indie arcade flight game, you'll have to share the same joypad)

Fist of the North Star (a Dinasty Warriors clone)

Fuse (team tps)

Haze (failed Halo clone)

House of the Dead 4 (very old lightgun)

House of the Dead Overkill (lightgun, has extra levels compared to Wii)

Hunted the demon's forge (shitty slasher)

Ibb & Obb (absolutely charming little platformer)

JUJU (cheap indie platformer)

Katamari Forever (great fun)

Kane and Lynch (average tps)

Killzone 3

Lego games (lots of them, all the same)

Little Big Planet 1-3 (subpar platorming with an irritating 'BE CREATIVE!!!' theme, which amounts to spraying tags and cosmetics)

Metal Slug games (always great)

Portal 2 (coop is quite fun)

Puppeteer (phenomenal dark fairy tale, what LBP should have been)

Puyo Puyo Tetris (this one is actually versus)

Rage (boring FPS from has beens)

Rainbow Six Vegas 1-2 (tactical tps lite)

Ratchet and Clank Nexus, One for All (kids love em)

Rayman Origins and Legends (look stunning)

Resident Evil 5-6 (much more fun in coop)

Resident Evil lightgun games (well done)

Resistance 2 (console wars era fps)

Scott Pilgrim (final fight clone, it's ok)

Splinter Cell Blacklist (get seen once, it's game over and back to beginning)

Starhawk (tps with base building)

Star Wars Republic Heroes (average overhead brawler)

The cursed crusade (shit slasher)

The Smurfs 2 (kids only)

Tomb Raider and the Guardian of Light (bona fide coop isometric action game)

Time Crisis Razing Storm (three lightgun TC games, decent)

Tokyo Jungle (survival metroidvania where you use animals which age, need to eat and reproduce)

Trine 1-2 (born for coop, great)

Twisted Metal Black (carmageddon with guns)

Uncharted 3 (ridiculous install size for a few coop shootouts)

Untold Legends (average slasher)

Voltron (strictly for kids)

Wipeout HD (superb, get the expansion)

- Nier (the second playthrough is unforgettable)

- Space Invaders Infinity Gene (incredible wireframe art)

- Yakuza: skip 3, try 4 and 5. (intriguing story)

Yeah I love my PS4 controller. The PS3 controller was a piece of shit. It's also nice that you can plug in PS2 adapters and use PS2 controllers, which is something I do quite frequently due to their superior build quality, and for playing local games.

>>14653550

Oh yeah, that's also true. Back when I got my PS3 I had two DS3s and two DS2s with the USB adapter for 4-player action.

It really sucks that Sony dropped the ball with retrocompatibility on the PS4. Connecting a DS3 makes an error pop up, so it should work but Sony programmed it so that it won't. Hell, some PS4 games which use the Skullgirls input driver can use generic USB gamepads (e.g. MK X, SFV). Sadly the compatibility on PS4 is game-dependent, not system dependent. Same goes for steering wheels. The good old G25 works on PC and PS3 by default, but on PS4 only GT Sport (which is meh) supports it whereas the other racing/rally games do not - they expect you to buy the G29.

PS3 can run PS1 games right out and use old memcards via the USB adapter. Meanwhile on PS4 you get jack shit.

Have fun with co-op action, anon. I heavily recommend giving Tales of Vesperia a shot. Since you have CFW you can play the english translated version, and it's one of the best Tales titles. (The english x360 version lacks a lot of content that was added on PS3).

Aside from Vesperia there's Graces - Story is cookie cutter jrpg friendship stuff but the combat is absolutely outstanding.

Via an USB adapter of sorts? Or it's a Saturn style pad that comes with USB already?

Most fighters use that driver, but sadly other kinds of MP games (puyo, racing, shooters) do not - so you're stuck with DS4s.

Goldeneye is pretty fun. A minus point compared to the Wii version is that motion controls only work on single player. It does include many new things to compensate, though!

In the Wii version you were able to mix-match GC pads, Wiimotes, Pro Controllers and so on.

Well, for simulation there's Gran Turismo. Both the 5 and 6 servers are already dead so you can only play offline. Some prefer 5's system but 6 does have a lot more content, even if it's just recycled from GT4. Going from 1.0 to the latest update in GT6 will set you back about 20 gigs worth of disk space, and the PS3 is reaaaaaaaally slow installing these updates.

As for arcade racers, Modnation is fun for multiplayer aside from the aforementioned Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed (debatable which version is best, but each one has a specific bonus character. In PC it's Team Fortress team).

>The game is centered on the Polish romantic pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 39. The story envisions a fictional world dreamed by Chopin during his last hours that is influenced by Chopin's life and music, and in which he himself is a playable character, among others.

wow, that's a unique concept for a game

15d77f No.14658916

>>14658711

Yeah, it is quite unusual. Bamco did a pretty respectable job in the localization - they consulted with the Chopin society in Warsaw for fact-checking (between chapters you get tidbits of Chopin's life stories in a VN-style presentation featuring some static art and of course his songs, played by pianist Stanislav Bunin).

As for the game, think Tales but each character has his/her own turn to act, instead of being fully real-time. It's also pretty goddamn hard - later bosses will knock your teeth in if you don't learn to guard/parry properly.

As for the multiplayer aspect, each party member can be assigned to a different player.

They did solid work overall in Tales of Xillia and Abyss as well, but Zesty and especially Berseria are quite lackluster in comparison (latter mainly in optional side content. Pisses me off that they don't pay attention to stuff like optional skits.)

Pretty much. Their self proclaimed favorite projects are ones like Baten Kaitos Origins, where they have pretty much no oversight and are allowed to take over every aspect of the localization.

>They did solid work overall in Tales of Xillia and Abyss as well, but Zesty and especially Berseria are quite lackluster in comparison (latter mainly in optional side content. Pisses me off that they don't pay attention to stuff like optional skits.)

Here's the thing: 8-4 only handled Tales out here from Abyss PS2 up through Hearts R. Xillia 2, Zestiria, and Berseria seem to use a different group (X2 lists 8-4 as Special Thanks if memory serves, maybe for borrowing terms and names 8-4 had come up with prior, I don't know). Said new team seems to need some more experience/QC if you ask me. Granted, I'm glad 8-4's off the series after Hearts R (though I suspect part of why that was so badly handled was more than Bamco didn't give enough of a shit to keep 8-4 on a remotely tight leash), but some more care to catch references, or see what the established name for things, if only amongst fans are, would go a long ways. But I figure neither Bamco or 8-4 left behind a "guidebook" of sorts as to how to keep things cohesive (even 8-4 started straying from that with Xillia's new arte names), and that just doublechecking aselia wiki would be "unprofessional" or something.

15d77f No.14659680

>>14659624

I'd say you're right on the 'guidebook' thing. Every officially translated Tales game has multiple instances of 'why the fuck did they call this arte like this' cases which set most fans REEEEing around. If Bamco had a written set of 'standards' this kind of shit wouldn't happen. Normally it's not that bad imo, but X2 was pretty retarded though: Time Disintegration made me lol.

Hearts R probably had a budget of two bottles of soda and a half-eaten sandwich - Bamco wasn't really that concentrated on it, but at least we got the game out thanks to that Sony campaign. Now that Enso is available, I'd like to help work on an eventual retranslation - toolsets should be easily adaptable to H:R.

There really is no golden standard, but things have gotten pretty bad (not Wrecking Designs tier bad, but we're getting there) nowadays:

>Xseed

Flip-flopping around, there's stuff like Akiba's Trip masterful disregard of SJW complaints (yay) only to have Akiba's beat controversy fucking everything up.

>NISA

Bugs. Also an atrocious release for Ys VIII that even a first-time fan translator would be ashamed of. Can't forget random censorship!

>8-4

Aforementioned stuff. Guess budget and direction goes a long way. Nier (first one) absolutely blew me away - it's one of the few games I don't bother undubbing.

>Treehouse

How about dem epic memes fam

>Aksys

Sometimes there's a Muramasa which is nice. Then there's Blazblue which is even more of dem epic memes. The fuck…?

>Pqube/Inti

Double Peace was ok as far as I checked, but Valkyrie Drive did have some controversy spin out. Haven't tried any other of their titles so far.

>Crunchyroll

First try out with a Danmemo mobage and they already fucked up. Good riddance.

>>14659680

>I'd like to help work on an eventual retranslation - toolsets should be easily adaptable to H:R.

Good luck with that. At this point there's pretty much no translation groups for Tales left, assuming the Rebirth team isn't still chugging away at their game (which no one will know about since they haven't posted and updates on their altervista site since 2013, and due to mooching off A0t's forums, no one can contact them that way anymore either).

>Muramasa Rebirth

I think part of why that one wound up good is that Ignition was noted as having done a rather bad job with the Wii original before, thus Aksys might have felt compelled to do a lot better, perhaps because if it became the go-to version to play they'd stand to get more money in the long term. Speaking of which, Ignition UTV's another oddball company worth looking into with variable quality.

Anyhow, it's also interesting to note how many of these publishing companies and/or localization teams are based out of the US' libshit-infested west coast. Though 8-4 and Pqube are odd in that the former is based in Japan and and the latter in the UK to my knowledge.

Ugh, don't remind me. I'm still royally pissed of at what A0 did after teasing everyone with those streams - at the very least they could release the current work so far. The forums were dead already, it's all that newfangled disagreement now. (I lurked a bit after the A0 shutdown but there was nothing of interest in there).

If Kingcom can be contacted, ToD PS2 could be restarted - he's the one behind the extremely handy toolset, after all.

793e8f No.14659894

>>14659872

His site's FAQ page says something about being him and KaioShin being regular lurkers on rhdn's IRC (though who knows how up-to-date that fact is anymore), and I suppose one could always leave a comment on one of his posts on aerie.wingdreams that could get noticed, assuming he still uses it (he hasn't updated anything in a while, and even the last post he said things had been slow due to being busy with A0t's now cancelled work. Harnessing Kajitani's anger towards Bamco could also be useful, but like Kingcom, he's stopped updating his site as well. Maybe anyone involved is feeling burned out by how things went, and of course there's the issue of whether Kingcom's tools even belong to him, or if they were considered property of the (failed) projects he was working on.

15d77f No.14659902

>>14659894

Kingcom's the dev behind those tools 100% as far as I know. Some of his tools (for other titles) are on github already, but the ToD ones aren't since I guess they're not fully finished. I heavily doubt he would've given control of the tools to A0.

Kajitani made an April fools post and acknowledged what happened to A0 but that's about it.

Also I forgot there was a wordfilter for that gaming oriented chat client lol

793e8f No.14659915

I actually just saw that myself. I'd like to think he doesn't agree with how things were handled, but it's a bit hard to tell given how sarcastic his April Fool's posts generally are. Maybe if he is working on something for Destiny, he wants to keep it on the down-low until he's got something tangible. But that's still making an assumption.

Strikes me that this is part of the issue with so many people having been tied into other group's projects: if one shuts down, they all lose their progress.

Think I've heard that EX Troopers did have one in the works too, but I'm not sure how much progress has really been made.

Anyhow, I've backed up copies of the patch files for what Tales have been completed, just in case more start going all "shut it down" on what they've managed to finish. A0t deleting their former finished patches because people shouldn't be playing them or something? They didn't go whole hog and DMCA rhdn or pirate sites that hosted prepatched files, and there's still working downloads from archived versions of their site someone had the forethought to make, so I don't even know why they bothered aside from "this is to show we're totally serious this time".

I think anon meant for the internal, in which case it's irrelevant as the PS3 will format it to its own type.

However, for external drives, FAT32 is easiest but has the issue with split games indeed, whereas NTFS support has been around for some time already.

As for the external drive characteristics, pretty much any USB external will work, but PS3 only has USB2.0 ports, keep that in mind. A laptop drive in an enclosure also works. Lastly, the drives do require energy - small 500/1TB drives can work directly but this also means that the other USB port will be wonky if you connect something such as a steering wheel or a PS2-USB adapter. For this reason I copy 4-player games to the internal disk, just in case I need to use the PS2-USB adapter.
