Hey, man. I'm pretty sure that Japanese poll was just a way of teasing Sakura Wars, because Sakura Wars was a default option. Jet Set Radio wasn't even an option, you needed to write it in manually, which I did, and the game came in SECOND PLACE on the poll. Because Puyo is a lousy competitive puzzler and always has been. The whole tetris concept never lended itself very well to competitive multiplayer. Let me know when there's a Puzzle League or Tetrisphere tournament or something though.

Puzzle League is moderately popular actually. The only reason it's never had the sort of glamor as Puyo Puyo is because Nintendo are dicks and refuse to do arcade releases.

Tetris is a puzzle game concept never intended or designed around a two-player experience and the many attempts over the years to try and make something out of it that it just doesn't lend itself well to from Puyo Puyo to Puzzle Fighter have always shared the same unfortunate flaws of the "avalanche effect" where a player gets the upper hand and 90% of the time that snowballs into a victory.

There are definitely puzzle concepts that are designed from the ground up to work competitively. But random falling blocks that clear when you connect a number of similar ones just isn't one of them.

It's mindgames anon. That's the big thing separating a game that has a versus mode from a game that works competitively. Honestly, in either of the games you have mentioned what can you do with your game pieces other than immediately send them? Is there even a point to look at your opponent's screen? Your opponent either knows how to make a big chain with their pieces already on the screen or doesn't. Why can't you do anything about the garbage that your opponent is sending you except for getting rid of it when it's already on your screen?
