My favorite experience was generating a deep world where I spawned on the bottom most isle, almost entirely in the shadows of the islands above it. I had to slowly build my tower up, island by island, until I knew the peace of the light of day.
Modern minecraft can't ever hope to give me that experience.

Don't fucking remind me. Recently on a whim I loaded up Minecraft for the first time in five years or so, the worldgen has actually gotten WORSE. Not just superficially, but actually in gameplay potential too. I noticed that in the most recent version of the game, the underground is practically solid stone compared to older versions where there were way more caves. Check out these screenshots from two worlds I had, one from Beta 1.3 or something, and one from 1.12. The difference is fucking miles apart, the caves are far smaller and less circuitous than they used to be.

There's no such item, are you thinking of Terraria? Firstly, you never dig straight down. Secondly, you'd want to bring a bucket of water with you into the caves so you can make a waterfall to swim up/down. Also I usually brought a stack of gravel/sand so I could drop blocks down to make staircases.

The above-ground world gen is almost as disgraceful as the modern cave systems. They've done nothing to make worldgen better (and, in fact, have made it way worse) since Beta. Like everything with Minecraft, mods salvage what would otherwise be a garbage video game. Check out the worldgen in this mod, Biome Bundle. Why the fuck doesn't the base game have this kind of variety?

There are advanced world gen settings, yes. But oddly, cave density is the ONE fucking option in the game you can't change. The guy from that forum post I linked fixed it by going into the jar and manually editing a line of code to increase cave frequency. Takes some janky work to make the executable not detect the changed code though.
Otherwise, I think the only way to fix it is with mods.

I'm also disappointed because if anyone remembers this was already in the game. A couple servers I played at the time enabled it via mods in addition to the normal world. It was bare and had only chickens soawning, but it was fun to build on and explore regardless. It just had to be fleshed out.

Like I said, they implemented the basic terrain generation for it and nothing else. It could have potentially been as good as or better than FLAOT but that never happened because it was removed a couple versions later.

In trying better than wolves I discovered where to get the old launcher, which should let you use old versions, I think. One thing you have to do in the .minecraft folder is go into options.txt and remove the line lang: en-us (or whatever is there) because (((they))) put it in as a trivial line which crashes old versions. There's a mod for forge that allows you to change playermodels/skins on the fly. It's sadly mostly furry shit though, but it does allow you to play as mobs so you can be a skeleton army, but you know damn well some fag is going to play as a furry and try to erp in chat.

For some reason i like seeing pictures like these. Seeing the amateurish/organic creations by normal players is kinda nice, reminds me when i first played minecraft in beta. I guess iv'e also grown kinda tired of the same copy and paste build style that practically all fucking youtubers seem to have developed now for some reason these days. I don't mind fancy or modern builds, but now i guess since ive seen so many they all blend together.
