I think a lot of it had to do with what fans wanted and 7th gen fucking things up for KojiPro alongside the rest of gaming. One thing I've noticed about the MGS titles most people liked is that they can almost work as standalone titles, including 2. The framework that makes them so good just can't support also following up another game's baggage, let alone 3 of them. 4 was fucked no matter what they did. The handheld games were a little better, but were still hurting due to being Snake Eater sequels instead of doing their own thing completely. I don't have to say anything about V at this point. MGS should function plotwise like Final Fantasy, different story each game with some callbacks here and there.

I had tried Yakuza 1 through emulation but wasn't really convinced apart from the battle theme. The dub might have contributed to this.

I played a little of MGS2 (the HD Collection version), but hated the controls, so I put it down pretty quick. The only Metal Gear game I've properly played was MGR, which I loved.
A coworker lent me Ground Zeroes, and while it was hilariously short, I adored the gameplay. Is it worth playing The Phantom Pain if I don't know (and don't really care) about the rest of the series?
