Just a stealth-themed indie platformer. I haven't played it myself so I don't know if it's good or not, I was just spitting out titles.

There's also Invisible Inc., but that's a turn-based tactical stealth game so probably not what you're looking for.

Stealth inc is an alright speedrunners haven. It's less about stealth and more about timing puzzles though.

You can try both Styx games. They make good use of verticality and being a wisecracking goblin. The controls are slightly off specially when you're getting off/on ledges but otherwise they're good.

Have you played it? The gimmick got worn out for me pretty early on, also had the press-button-for-cinematic-takedown and press-button-to-stick-to-cover things.

Silent Assassin is kind of unforgiving in regards to detections, but Contracts is more managable.

IMO it is THE stealth game. Does not consist of just avoiding guards, but paying attention and thinking which disguise to get, who to get it from, and where to put the body.

I've been playing Shadwen, it was so close to being great. Not sure why you would make a time freeze game, all while the AI is more dopey than Thief. Decent animation on the guards and all, decent swingan. It gets fuggy though.

For anyone that hasn't played it, mostly a huge escort mission through a stealth area. Or, you could just kill everyone and it's ezpz. It has a rewind feature. On top of time stopping if you are not moving. Duplo stealth travesty.

the first one's decent even if buggy and frustrating at parts, playing it at the highest difficulty makes it a stealth game with no combat, get caught and you die. Second game looks more polished but the "humor" turned me off and I didn't finish the first level

Also, it's much easier to get SA rating in Contracts. Even having your "cover blown" will not ruin it if they don't start shooting.

As others have pointed out play:

Thief. Thief 2 The Metal age is the best one, and the new one that came a few years ago is serviceable.

Splinter Cell. Chaos Theory is the apex of the series but all of them are good, except for Conviction.

Hitman. The new one is overall the best game in the series (turn off any objective markers) followed closely by Blood Money and Contracts. The rest of the series is good though.

Styx. Play Shards of Darkness, the first ain't bad but it has some issues.

Deus Ex HR and MD. Mechanics wise MD is better but it's rather short.

MGS series. Snake eater.

Dishonored. 1-2 are good but only if you play them as a killer, don't bother trying non-lethal these games don't have enough mechanics for that playstyle.

I don't know man there are a lot of pure stealth games out there but some of them like Tenchu ain't on PC. Those are the ones I'd call "essential" but there are many decent indie stealth games.

I also recommend the first Styx. I haven't played the second one.

I'm playing Satellite Reign right now. It's a squad game but I'm stealthing around compounds and it is intense.

Thief 2. Get Taffer patch

Some say Thief 3 but I didn't like it too much and ended up dropping it.

Splinter Cell series: SC, SC: Pandora Tomorrow, SC: Chaos Theory and SC: Double Agent for XBOX or PS2. Don't touch the ones after.

Metal Gear Solid series. 1-3 are great, 4 is a massive slog and is basically Kojima throwing a hissy fit in vidya form, PW sucks and V is great but half finished.

Deus Ex, HR and MD are good for stealth, the latter two being current year gaming.

Dishonored 1 and 2 but non-lethal stealth is boring as fuck in those games.

Dark Messiah is pretty good for stealth.

I plan to play Kingdom Come Deliverance again, with a focus on stealth, sneaking, assassin playstyle etc. don't know how good it actually is with its stealth though.

I'm not a Hitman fan, but many swear by the series possibly with the exception of the first.

Death to Spies, low budget and buggy WWII Hitman, haven't played but people say good things.

Tenchu series, didn't get very far with the first so can't say.

Mark of the Ninja, awesome 2D stealth game.

Styx 1 is great if limited with its black/white stealth system. 2 is casualize and Styx becomes an insufferable Deadpool ripoff.

Tried to play Hitman 2 a while back, but the magic AI pisses me off.

Stealth is a pretty underappreciated genre sadly. We mostly just have Splinter Cell, Thief, Deus Ex, Hitman, Tenchu, Metal Gear Solid, Styx and a bunch of indie side-scrolling or top-down games. Even a lot of potential stealth games these days give the player the option to just run in a shoot with little to no repercussions. Splinter Cell is my favourite though. Partly because I almost get to live my childhood dream of being a ninja/spy.

Once you play Thief 1&2 enough to get decent every other stealth game becomes unplayable trash.
