A kingdom come get set in Mexico/Guatamala with the actual advanced civilizations would work though if you picked the right time period: The Spanish unfortunately burned almost all of their books and written records, but a lot of stone steele survived in Maya cities in the jungle that documented the time from around 200ad to 900ad, and a lot was written about Aztec history from 1200ad to 1519, by survivors and their childern as the conquest was going on, so both of those would work.

There seems to be a severe disconnect in the industry even on our shores. In college (4 or 5 years ago) I took game design courses. Many of the students were as cringy as you'd expect but the staff taught surprisingly good lessons and took game design quite seriously. One of the exercises we did was just like you describe, you have to write a pitch for a game and it has to fit on one page. I'll tell you why this game failed, it has a totally shithouse name that can't be found easily, its hard to say and it resonates as pure pretentiousness. Even based on that, looking at the actual game itself, the art is unremarkable, its all static, most indie games at the minimum can product animated artwork (see Amello for example). The developer bringing in help was also a huge mistake because what I can see is that it didn't help at all in any way possible, its just more mouths to feed.

Also you'd probably find that a large sum of his funds were paid in bribes, I know other indie developers that did this in order to get press coverage and then they get all butthurt in the same way- exact same types of articles, stating how "Unfair" it all is. Bullshit, you tried to bribe someone, the bribe failed, you got scammed by someone you thought was a friend, probably next time instead of bribing people keep the money and instead adopt a self marketing strategy, its easy to even get 1,000 people to want to play your game, if your business model is sustainable that can easily translate into profit if you're smart on pricing and aren't a big enough shit heel to at the minimum provide a demo.

I might regret suggesting this, but Askhistorians is a fantastic resource as well: It's part of plebbit, but I stand by that it's the one worthwhile part of the site: The only people who post there are either actual experts iin their fields, or are hyper-autists who might as well be, and posts without citations or without being super detailed get removed.
