Why did they change Katsuragi's moveset into charge buttons in the versus games? She should be doing faster moves with more rapid kicks, but for whatever reason they made her slow and clunky. If they had to make one charge character per team Hibari should've been filling that role. Also They rotted her character so she's just "I like boobs" and dropped the entire clingy aspect of her; her constant touching and groping being a manifestation of her fear of abandonment due to her parents leaving her alone. They started off so well with the Hanzo girls and managed to fuck them all up, Katsuragi, Yaguu, and Hibari all had something going on as an internal conflict and Ikagura had her family politics but it's all been discarded. Asuka has always been shit to be honest but she sort of has the aspect of living up to her family name as some kind of character challenge.
I get that it's a series for fan service and that should come first, but what made it stand out from it's contemporaries was that the girls actually had some character. There's a reason everyone (in the west at least)hates Yumi and it's because she's about as interesting as watching paint dry. I've kinda just rambled a bit on my SK grievances so tl;dr - The 3DS SK games are good and all the new stuff sucks, Katsuragi is the best girl but I wish they'd fix her moves in the VS games.
A Question for the people who like Yumi; Why? Ikagura has the same demeanour but is a better character.

I actually liked EV a lot. PBS was complete garbage though, what a disaster. As far as fan service goes I would really like it if a Senran game had some serious moments with blood in it, like a character got beat up and spits out blood that's pooling in their mouth, but that's just me.

The series in general leaves a lot to be desired. For me I'd wish they'd make a decent effort to add meaningful mechanics and difficulty to the series. Even while playing the games on hard there is barely any challenge. To make it worse any challenge can be overcome by just grinding or a lucky level up that fills your health and scrolls. Canning the level system would add some consistency to how levels play out and revamping the enemies so that more needs to be done than repeating a single combo would provide some pleasant difficulty. As far as the story goes it's all a blur. Little interesting happens and they write way too much of it. It might be more interesting if the different schools had meaning conflicts but they always throw those away by the end of the games.

At this point I think the creators don't know what to do with the series's success. Gameplay has remained largely flat, a decent base that never gets fully used or expanded on. The main story hasn't advanced in a while, even getting a recent reboot, while the spin-off side story is wandering around genre-wise with no actual advancement. The steady mobage money means there's little motivation to do anything beyond tread water and let things stagnate: attempts to expand on the gameplay or story will just split the fanbase. Slowly declining sales and interest will eventually lead to a "last chapter" game and a quiet ending, with a few compilation releases and so on to round things out.

The 2nd DS game did some interesting stuff, they tried to go in a more serious direction with the story and you actually fight the yoma, including some nicely designed bosses.
Unfortunately the gameplay is a mess. They tried to increase the difficulty and make combat deeper, and you ended up with enemies that just deal insane amounts of damage and broken movesets. You can break the game even further by stacking attack stones, so you get a game where you can one shot almost everything, and almost everything can one shot you. The game eventually boils down to just getting the first hit on everything until you finish it.
Some people think it was going in the direction of being the next Ninja Gaiden or some shit and they claim it's the best entry in the series. I honestly don't think those people have played a Ninja Gaiden game, ever, and honestly SK loses a lot of charm when it tries getting "serious."
This franchise was made on a silly whim and blew up in a way no one could have imagined. Now it's stuck in this void of either playing it safe or attempting to become something it isn't to satisfy people that think titty ninjas needs to be DEEP. People talk about wasted potential, but that's like expecting Highschool DxD to turn into Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I'm expecting the next mainline game to be a trainwreck as a result of the identity crisis of this franchise.

Character bloat was just one of many issues with Nanoha. The biggest issue I noticed is that the writer couldn't figure out any threat dangerous enough to warrant Nanoha and friends to go into full befriendment mode. This is why we got a set of new recruits and 20 layers of limiters on Nanoha and friends in Strikers and why the series ended up going completely into left field, abandoning its premise, and spinning off into a martial arts sports series.

The same threat issue shows up in SK. According to the backstory, "good" and "evil" ninja kill each other all the time, but that's out the window since everyone's basically friends now. The yoma were supposed to be a way out of that, but if the main characters are fighting yoma without dying left and right, they'd canonically be the greatest ninjas ever, making all the dead family members look incompetent. There's no way out besides competitions like in Estival Versus and Peach Beach Splash, which is why that's all we're getting now.

Exactly. SK cornered itself in the same manner, complete with befriending everyone to the point of nullifying any potential conflicts. The only way to fix it now would be introducing something to force a divide between the schools/characters. Oh yeah I forgot to address you. In EV there's, what, 5-6 main girls per faction, four factions, and a few randoms. Where you may only enjoy a few girls at most, the game wants you to play and level up most of them. It's not like a fighting game where you can generally "main" one or two classes even if the roster is large.
A lot of the issue could be fixed by just taking the level system out though. I think in general games should consider whether it adds or detracts from the game.
