Here's the thing though, fortnite is low yield as fuck so they can throw it onto any PC and since it's "cartoony" braindead reviewers think that it's "Stylish" or unique, a little like overwatch but with even less regard for design philosophies. Just make it slightly "quirky" and easy to run and you're in the bag, because you can make the game T rated now too increasing potential consumers. Expect a lot more games to have visuals like this in coming years.

I've never even played tf2 myself but it has a cohesive aesthetic, a cartoony play on the gloomy atmosphere so many of its genre contemporaries had, taking a more whimsical approach to the grays and browns of industry and warfare.

I'd argue that Overwatch does a decent job because every hero is a character into itself and every detail in them is made to flesh out their personality and role in the game. They end up being far more polished and clearly convey what they are just from a first glance.
Fortnite doesn't have characters since their "classes" have little differences between them besides height and width since they have to use too large and too common a loadout so they end up looking incredibly generic.
That's why it looks so bad, it's not exactly terribly drawn, it's just terribly generic.
There's also the attempt at some cartoony shit like things shrinking and shaking when you shoot at them or some of the player animations.
I'm actually all for that goofy cartoony shit and I wish more games did that, but you gotta stay consistent with it, which they didn't. The characters are a blend between that style and still trying to be on our side of the uncanny valley, the guns are trying to look big, simple and wacky while keeping "realistic" design for familiarity.
I dunno if anyone tried the game Loadout, but it was basically this style very well done. Incredibly goofy looking characters, animations, objectives and weapons, also combining some sci-fi elements to them as well and it just looked both great and fun.
Shame about the shepig they added as a character and the fucking colossal cash-op that was basically required if you didn't wanted to grind for the rest of your life because the game was actually genuinely fun, what with some of the weapon combinations you could do. Don't even know if it's still active, but that was basically this style, but well done.

I have Fortnite downloaded on my PS4 because it was free and I figured I might as well check it out to see what all the fuss was about, but it's been sitting there for over four months and I've never actually bothered to start it up even once. I try to introduce him to all these other games I have. Gravity Rush, Ni No Kuni, Nier: Automata, Bloodborne, Dragon Quest Builders, Project Diva, Moss, Yakuza, Valkyria Chronicles, God of War III, Shantae, Super Cloudbuilt, Let it Die… nope, and he wasn't even curious about the VR garbage. All these games that he never heard about, new experiences to him, and he instead chose to sit there doing absolutely fucking nothing while waiting for the Fortnite updates to download.
What the fuck is wrong with kids today? I remember loving going over to friends houses when I was a kid, because even though I enjoyed my Sega systems - it was always cool seeing what other stuff was coming out on the Nintendo systems we couldn't afford to also have. I didn't just sit there playing multiplat shit like Mortal Kombat crying about how SNES didn't have all my favorite Genesis games.

Why not? My nephew was also over, and he's even younger - about 9 years old - and he always plays Dragon Quest Builders, Guilty Gear, Dragon Quest Heroes, and God of War III. He also loves The PlayRoom VR minigames and is really looking forward to playing Ni No Kuni 2 when he comes out later over Spring Break. Ni No is piss easy enough that he doesn't really need to get in-depth with mechanics and it has decent enough pacing to not get him bogged down in waves of exposition dumps the way most JRPGs do. He keeps wanting to play Digimonstory: Cybersleuth - but he's honestly really bad at games and I think the tons of reading and stat management is going to bore him. Maybe when he's a bit older.
Shit, I even got him into playing classic games like Commander Keen, Raptor: Call of the Shadows, and Super Mario World. But, I think a lot of that is because his dad is a Mr. Mom stay-at-home dad and is dealing with two other kids - so he has kind of short fuse and gets shitty with the boy for not being great at games immediately. So when he's home, most of what he plays is casual shit like Peggle that's so piss easy he doesn't need any help and won't get yelled at and berated. I think he just really likes having someone there to play games with - and it doesn't even really matter what the game is.
I've got a 360 too, and he tried to get my cousin's boy to play Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, TMNT: Arcade, and Street Fighter IV - and my cousin's boy (who's like 12) immediately threw the controller down and said "this is garbage, the graphics are garbage, don't you have Call of Duty or Halo?"
Maybe my nephew's taste in games will enter it's shit-phase once he's a bit further along in school and is influenced by his friends garbage tastes - but hopefully, if I lay a good foundation now, those seeds will sprout and he'll be more open to good games and that will eventually lead to a critical attitude towards flavor-of-the-month trends.

Probably saved the game from dying completely since no one talked about it till they added BR mode.
