"Gamers" back then are people who actually have the capacity and willingness to learn (read the bloody manuals, trial-and-errors, risk-takers, going outside ones comfort zone). The capacity and willingness to learn is the hallmark of an intelligent being.
"Gamers" nowadays are dimwits who need their hands hold, their world views validated, their ego pandered and catered to. And the companies that do not take risks, do not venture, making shekels inside their comfort zone pandering to whose dimwits who need their safe space and comfort zones in a disgusting cycle of repeated greed and regression.
