Niche counterparts to popular games. Or games with a similar playstyle that never became as well-known and might be considered better than what it's mimicking in some cases. More specifically, are there any games similar to Fire Emblem? Tactical/strategic gameplay, stats, classes, medieval setting, unique units/characters? Preferably without the waifu-pandering.

Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Advance Wars (Though more modern it's still an enjoyable time).

Hell, if you just want Fire Emblem without waifu pandering, play the older ones That is everything pre-Awakening

I have been, in fact, I've never played a Fire Emblem past Awakening. But I've been wondering if there were other series' that could fill it's spot considering the road it's been going down since Awakening. I've played the games you've mentioned, but those feature generic unnamed units. And seeing as Tactics Ogre and FF Tactics are dead as well, it seems there's nothing of comparison to fill the void.

I've heard of Shining Force and I've been meaning to get around to it, I thought it was more similar to a turn-based RPG? Wachenroder is new to me. Makes me wish Saturn emulation was better.

Shining Force 1 & 2 are classic Genesis/Megadrive games, but they're a lot less tactical than Fire Emblem. That being said, still pretty fantastic games, and well worth the playthroughs. They're certainly more "turn-based JRPG" than they are SRPG, though.

Sad to say this, but most of the standouts of the TRPG genre is dead… aside from Fire Emblem - and that future doesn't look great Though Echoes shows vast improvement over the 3DS titles, especially Fates, which is the low point of the entire series

That's what I've been worried about, hence this thread. Strategy games with generic expendable pawns aren't as fun. Fire Emblem had an edge in the fact it made you care about losing units and who they were as people, wanting them to grow stronger and survive until the end. Although I'd argue older Fire Emblem games gave you characters who felt expendable in both personality and stats. And the GBA games are fantastic because most every character feels worthwhile.

I've yet to get a decent Genesis emulator, know any you'd recommend? Besides Shining the Holy Ark, what other games in the series do you recommend?
