pls. Mobs really do need to be ramped up, tho. There needs to be real threats. On the practice serb before, there were mobs everywhere. Crocs were spawning out from their nest faster than we could kill them. It was hell, but it was fun as fuck. Roaming hoards would be nice. Something else to defend against besides other kingdoms.

We had a high of about 50. 4chan has half a million users on every day, of course they'd be more populated. Hell you even see roughly five or so of them constantly lurking the 8chan threads and some more to shitpost. We'd have had more to join but with this pitiful map size and poorly coordinated server you'd walk two steps from [insert kingdom] spawn and you'd be a stone's throw away from the other. Speaking just for myself, I wanted to hermit and possibly make a side village from the one the thread would be maining. But there was no where to settle that wouldn't be raped by everyone including your own kingdom potentially that was also decent fertile land. Plus the serb was thrown together pretty hastily so it's no surprise problems occurred with 50 autists playing together in one room.

I stopped playing like a week back. Though if the next serb features a larger map I'd like to make an even smaller village with some of you lads for the sake of comfy. Spurda was really fun while I was there despite it's flaws but what teamwork we had and the few ebin maymays made it fun.

The way I understand it, it was a short-sighted solution to a real problem at the time. It's easy to say that it was a bad decision in hindsight, but generals were plaguing the board before it was instituted. 8/v/ is slower than /v/ was even back then so it isn't really a problem here, But I'd still personally prefer it if everything was contained to one board even if we pick up speed. I've been personally gathering basic info from time to time for the past couple of weeks and I'm in the process of creating a how to play wurm for retards guide. I don't expect to see this completed or even a "basic newfag visual guides" done anytime soon™/6 months from now and no one else seems to want to do this.

What knowledge specifically about tiles in regards to surface mining and tunneling does need to be explained better that isn't available from wurmpedia/google? I haven't don't much with those particular skills.

The only thing I know iirc about tiles atm is the: "Where you right-click to select the dig command has absolutely no impact whatsoever on where you dig, where your avatars feet are is all that matters" - https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Digging

It was a bit confusing at first when I was getting dirt despite clicking on a clay tile. I didn't know at the time it was finicky about your avatar placement but I blame myself for not having read about it on wurmpedia before asking in-game. I'm guessing surface mining and tunneling have that similar issue as well?

Well basically everything can be learned from Wurmpedia, but if it's a guide then we need the biggest mechanics grouped together for people to refer to.

For terraforming, the corners is what should be explained in more detail because when I first played I was basically at mercy of the level command until I figured out how placing dirt worked. Only digging guide I can see is rambles too much and doesn't have suitable visual aids. I would tell them how to see the height of the corners and what the "X slope down/up" means. Then explain leveling vs flattening and how walls or stone will stop your terraforming projects.

Then I would relay the information from the PVP guide on Wurmpedia along with a guide for getting to 20 FS from a fresh start along with basic information on healing. We know the differences between swing speeds and damage but newbies don't so a little table on the different weapons along with dual wielding notes would be nice as well.

Information on priest restrictions and the gods benefits.

Some etiquette, rules and so on so you're not a cock sucker.

Essential mods.

You could either link the relevant pages or design your own guide and put it on imgur or some shit. I'd help but I'm not good at design, just information.

Most of my info will likely be based from wurmpedia since the other wiki sites are essentially dead. The difference between wurmpedia and what I'm attempting at is that this will be more of a in-depth guide sorta of thing with an emphasis on a lesser need for hyperlinks/searching or something to that effect.

For example: If someone new was reading the digging page on wurmpedia and wanted to know about the pile of dirt they were getting out of curiosity, that person would have to either unnecessarily click on the dirt hyperlink, get sent to https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Dirt before clicking another hyperlink for pile of dirt or have to manually type in 'pile of dirt' in the search field.

My guide for digging would have the pile of dirt page within the digging page under it's own subsection i.e. Materials along with Clay, Sand, Tar, etc. and it would contain more info than what is currently on https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Pile_of_dirt.

As for access: All of the info I'm gathering is stored offline in text format atm, my initial idea was to have our own wikia we all could collaborate on but having given it a bit more thought, I think that would be a big waste of time considering wurmpedia exists and it would be easier just to update that and have our own image and/or text guides.

Please be aware that this is somewhat of a fan project that I'm doing mostly for myself in order to have a better understanding of the game to it's very core mechanics rather than learn as I go, share what I know via playing the game normally online. I'm not the best candidate for this type of thing for countless reasons. What >>14557025 said is basic newfag visual guides and I'm taking that concept into maximum overdrive in my own way.

Literally anyone else with the time and knowledge can do this much faster than I could ever hoped to achieve, even if it's just simple visual guide on either how to play in general or for a specific skill. I'm currently the only one involved in this matter and my involvement is semi-active/part-time at best along with many other excuses as to why it will take time to finish a "complete guide", if ever.

Does the -2 combat rating penalty render atypical weapons worthless or can they still be viable? I'm drafting a fighting guide and I'm wondering if I should even include information on sickles and such.

According to a random post by Rolf apparently the base hit chance is determined by adding both CR values together in a fight then dividing the your CR to it. Two level 70s fighting, one using a sickle, would be 18 / (18 + 16) = 52% hit chance and (18 -2) / (18 + 16) = 47% so in theory I don't think it's a big deal unless you're using a belaying pin or some shit as your weapon.

Anything I'm missing?

IIRC wurm online gives xp for skills on a tick based system thus you want to use the shittiest of items to increase the action timer, or in this case, the duration of a fight. But in wurm unlimited you gain skill based on a completed action so you would want to use the best items you can possibly use, in this case, whatever weapon you can get your hands on that deals the most dps.

I hate it when the wiki throws in shit that is obviously regurgitated from people that have no clue what they are talking about.

Hits harder than the longsword, hits the speed cap with no training necessary in any combat style, and has one of the best potential DPS in the game according to the data. Dual wield them with LT on it and you end every fight with full health. Parry rate sucks but that's what a shield is for. The real penalties is the -2 CR nerf it had to get because it was too powerful (which is the laziest way to nerf it if you ask me) and the cutting damage in servers where everyone swears by plate + medium maul. Two handers still beat it in PVE since the armor on elite mobs just flat out makes 90% of the weapons useless. I use two sickles on Mythmoor and it worked fine until I switched to hammers for dragons, but you do notice that you get hit a little bit more often with the CR nerf.

Little tip I learned on PVE servers, you can train the skill for any weapon/tool in this >>14560728 picture on practice dolls up to level 20. It also gives you some skill in the parent skill, for example you get two handed swords, longswords, and shortswords all to 20 you will gain "swords" skill for all of those levels. However, you can't train parent skills itself so if you maxed all three subskills but you are only at swords level 12 any further training won't increase it to 20.

WU just gives you a flat skill tic for any successfully completed action while apparently WO gives different actions different skill gains. The idea with fighting training is that you get low ql sickles (preferably with LT) which already start with almost the quickest swing speeds and go fight some easy monsters and give it a death by a thousand cuts. This way each successful hit will give you skill in sickles, your fight skill and whatever characteristics you get with it. Not ideal for fighting skill grinding obviously but nice for getting your weapons and styles up without running everywhere.

You can do that later but this is intended for the beginning of a fresh start. Also let's you dual wield instead of dedicating a slot for a shield and dealing with defensive mode's speed penalty. Basically it gives you a little extra oomf from your practice doll at the very beginning and gives you a lot of long repair timers so you can get mind logic up extremely quick for piloting more vehicles.

Did some testing on a private server and it seems like plate armor negates any advantage sickles may have making mauls the most practical weapon in my eyes. So what everyone already thought is indeed the truth.

70 FS, 50 weapon skill, aggressive fight style, 50ql plate and medium metal shield.

Strictly aiming center, no focus or special moves.

>hammer: 4 wins

But once I threw on 50 power lifetransfer on the sickle and 50 power frostbite on the hammer . I selected these because they are usually considered the best enchants for these items.

Glancing attacks ruin any advantage the sickle could have (and I assume it's the same with longswords and such.) Accuracy also dropped by around 10% on the sickle while hammer had the usual 80% to hit.

You're right about the same glance rates on plate, so it just doesn't do enough damage. Same problem as most of the one-handers with high armor enemies like dragons and such.

This is ice wall and stone wall. It's only temporary and has to be cast on a tile border. The other picture is the necromancer book which lets you summon wraiths and skeletons.

Not enough desert. Also not enough steeps. Hand color in certain biomes so they take up an entire continent instead of having a scattered mess of biomes everywhere. I can already tell traversing this map and making roads will be a nightmare based on all the mountains everywhere and narrow passages. Go run a blurr or two over the height map so its not a jagged mess. Also it looks like there are hundreds of little clay tiles all over the place, pls get rid of the randomization and manually place some decent sized pits over the map. Make a tropical region with plenty of fruit trees of all types all over since making terraforming liquid takes literal tons to change a tile.

The main point I have to stress is have practically 0 randomization and make a well designed map, randomization is cancer in maps, apart from the height map.

Hostfag pls orientate the spawns to something like this so villages aren't 100 miles apart (for pvp), but still have room to explore/get wood and for hermit faggots to live in peace.

Biomes are way too lopsided. You have a tiny steppe and a (largely useless) tundra up top, an unnavigable tiny steppe slapped on top of a huge blob of mountains in the middle, then four whole steppes and the only desert on the south end. The sides are completely barren of biomes.

If the dark green is supposed to be forest, it's way too irregular. You want the vast majority of the default grassy areas forested minus the odd valley for variety.

Probably the biggest issue is how mountainous it is. That entire east side is a fucking nightmare, and so is the center landmass. That steppe you slapped down will be completely useless for the only purpose it serves (bison), as you'd need to climb up and down several mountains on foot both ways and chase bison which climb at full speed up and down some more. Ignoring how retarded a mountainous steppe is.

More snow/tundra for variety is fine, yeah, but it isn't nearly as important as well-distributed, relatively flat steppes. A player could set up a temporary camp at the single desert to grind his FS, but steppes exist so you can grab some bison, and you'll probably have to go get more at least once or twice due to death or those niggers bolting up a mountainside when your wagon gets stuck and you're too slow on the lead while unhitching.

Those mountains really are the biggest deal. I've covered the entirety of two past maps by land travel, and it quickly makes you realize how important it is to have flat coastlines and smooth passes around every mountain.

Keep in mind that vehicles and mounts won't even function past a certain height gradient. It's incredibly annoying when every other hill can't be handled by your mount and you need to feel around the edges your dismount and lead your horse every three minutes just to accomplish mundane travel. You have multiple portions of land about the size of current/last serb's entire map that is essentially a big blob of impassable mountain.

The map's utterly unplayable in its current overly mountainous state.

Bruce here, we are going ahead with a test server next week assuming the map is done! It will last until June and serve as a demo for the summer server. We will patch in mods and content as we go to see what works and doesn't.

Rates will be 3x 3x to ensure a logical rolling out of content instead of overloading with end game dragon raids and whatnot. PvP enabled as usual and epic curve will be added in the last week for everyone to experience the end game content we are planning out. Lemme know any other ideas that should be in the test server.

This level of blurring will make most, if not all Inclines traversable by cart.

This means that the subtle intricacies I created in the original, like water only access areas, and hidden cradles to set up in with natural protection from raiders no longer exists.

Things to note from the original posting: That map had a significant amount more dirt because of the numbers in dirt generations were turned to dramatic levels, these versions listed in this post do not have such and contain much less dirt overall.

Tell me which generation you believe is better and why AND post a screenshot of how you'd like the biomes to be laid out done in paint, add rivers and where you'd like ravines placed for ease of cart access through mountain zones, You can if you so wish include specific areas you think need further blurring

I'll take in everyone's opinion on this over the next few days and combine them into a map which will generally please no one.

TO Mapfags: I've figured out that Map relics such as rice paddies, pylons, body holes and general squaring of terrain are all caused by the pixelization from scaling the heightmap, No map should be used in Wgen that hasn't been blurred to at least a factor of 2 because erosion is just a peasants blur function that takes substantially longer to complete, pre-drawing in rivers in GIMP with a soft brush tool will also make life easier and prevent cliff beaches which have been plaguing some of the previous serbs. WGen should be saved for dirt, biome and ore generation only.

By association, there's also no flowing water and water levels are always at a constant fixed level that cuts through the whole map and keeps you from digging below it. Actual industrialization would make for great end-game material. Imagine a town running on a mill generator that provides electric lighting and some means of automatic processes so you can actually get other things done in town. Imagine snow-covered peaks that create streams that ebb and flow depending on the season, making extra fertile land or possible flooding.

I'm no mapfag and it's been ages since I hosted but if you're doing wrong what I think you're doing wrong, the heightmap needs to be saved as a 16-bit grayscale png. I wouldn't recommend trying to convert an 8-bit png or you'll end up with a map like >>14566865, which is a bitch to fix.

and I'm not actually sure of the details, but I think that maps smaller than 2048 require messing with the database to make them work properly.

Also, I've been ignoring these threads for a while so I haven't had a chance to just let it die already

Nigga you need to download the latest version of Gimp. MIND THIS IS NOT THE DEFAULT OPTION THEY GIVE YOU

You need the experimental build, the latest one lets you convert ANY IMAGE into 16 bit greyscale.

>Go into image dropdown on the toolbar at the top. 5th option from the left

>Go down to mode, select greyscale

>Save image as PNG

>Option to save as 15 bit greyscale once you've selected where to save it.

If any of these options don't come up then you have the wrong version.

I can understand why making this "too wordy"/extensive manual" by adding a shit tonne of information unrelated to Foraging may seem unnecessary but no one is forcing you to read all of it and this game is very complex, you should know better by now.

Remember:

For example, at the very bottom of it on my TO DO list, I've put in "adding information related to avatar and cart storage/ horse speed". While this may not be related to skill grinding/power leveling or even the skill itself, it IS related to being a dedicated Forager who goes out to collect these resources and bringing them back to their settlement. Having more storage means the Forager can be out there longer to bring back more resources (and shekels). Having more speed means less time in-between trips and being able to escape encounters with monster that they may have not been aware of their surroundings, not to mention that monsters tend to roam anywhere randomly and don't stay within a particular area so even if you're sure there is no monsters around and your attention has been entirely focused looking downwards, neglecting to check your surroundings, you will eventually encounter a monster sooner or later. Speed is very useful if you're under-leveled/don't train FS much like I did and want to escape the possibility of dying without having waste time going back getting your dead body. This is exactly this type of information I wish I could have known in advance it order to be better prepared for.

Foraging may not be as important of a skill to raise and have as a main profession as the other skills but in our limited populated server, people were thankful of my dedication for finding cotton for healing, woad/other Alchemy related items, sprouts for Woodcutters/outside decorations of their homes, vegetables for the cooks/animal feeding and the shekels for settlement upkeep/funding for items only available from NPC merchants.

If you still disagree with what I'm doing, by all means make up your own newfag guides for the skills you have knowledge in (or from the skill guides I'm writing for) and share it with others.

I hope I've answered your question as I'm not very well at expressing/explaining the method of my madness.

Some Tips/gripes:

Get Improved Improve and the toolbelt mod for fucks sake.

Imp everything you make to the highest you can.

Bind 'r' to repair and do so upon everything you find with a tick on it.

Make your own everything, unless that shit is crazy, then make it later.

Name your tools/suit.

If what you *do* isn't so in demand find a second/third role and keep up on your main skill up in the background, there's no shortage of jobs/things to do or collect.

Backpacks are better than cauldrons unless you're cooking a grim dinner.

Kiss miner ass, they fuel creation.

Assist those who churn out useful things and (eventually) they'll kick the shit out of whatever problems you face.

Set perms to let a few sane people be able to drag your cart away if it needs moving or if you leave.

Also if you're sat on a ton of useful shit and are going to leave then set perms for townsfolk to be able to reclaim it. Finally getting into a locked house full of rotting steel is like finding real torture porn.

Don't listen to people who say shit like 'creating/imping X is pointless', if it increases your skills it's not pointless, if you grind WS then yes shit a few thousand arrowheads of course but when you can, also make hundreds and hundreds of blades from shittest iron and imp them unfinished, it all adds to the skill, then put handles or shafts on the fuckers and imp them again for more. Similarly with plate, make 50 gauntlets, imp them as high as possible, smelt and repeat until your baseline steel is all 50ql, by then you'll probably never run out.

Don't ask what to do, do what you want to get your engine going, do the same job as someone else (even if they're established) if you want, you can pick up the slack, build surrounding skills and if you outlast them or are on more often suddenly you'll be the big dick in town.

You can select multiple things by Ctrl clicking or dragging a box over them, this can make trading and in particular imping much quicker.

You can select your whole suit and drag it onto the body in your character screen and it will all be equipped at once.

Also if you see a yellow box around a piece of armour in the character screen it can be repaired.

PROTIP: Get the mod that lets you bind any action to a key, then bind Repair to R and Improve to T. With this plus the improved improve mod you can just hover over a thing you want to imp and press R/T with two fingers over and over instead of tedious clicking.

PROTIP 2: More ingredients in a meal is not better. If you're training cooking, always make meals with the minimum two ingredients. You gain experience per meal, so use the smallest possible ingredients, too:

PROTIP 3: You gain XP in animal husbandry when feeding an animal, but you don't gain more from feeding a bigger thing. This means in order to maximize gains, you want to feed the smallest amount of a thing possible. Never feed an animal meat, feed it filets of meat. Never feed an animal a pumpkin, they're huge. Never feed a whole bowl of stew, rather use a reed pen to feed it an infinitesimally tiny amount of stew (which is a liquid and can go in a pen) at a time.

PROTIP 4: Pottery is useless. Any container you can make from ceramics has a lighter and/or bigger version that can be made with tailoring, carpentry, or blacksmithing. The only unique thing is pottery shingles, which can be made fairly easily even at level 1. Don't bother training this.

PROTIP 5: Butchering corpses with a proper Butchering Knife makes it give better products. Don't run around with your starting carving knife ruining all the potential loot.

PROTIP 6: EVERYONE would be well-served to train Carpentry and Masonry. They are pretty much mandatory for doing anything in the game unless you want to be totally dependent on someone else. You won't be able to build shit, make a cart to carry stuff, construct a guard tower, create furniture, pave roads, build a ship, etc. Always train these, you have no excuse.

PROTIP 7: The same goes for Mining and Digging. Even if you aren't a miner or a terraformer, nothing is worse than wanting to build something somewhere, or flatten a road, or make a farm, or whatever, and getting le epic "You are not skilled enough to dig in such steep slopes" meme. Just get a macro that clicks/clicks and walks forward and train these to at least 30 while semi-afk, you'll thank me later. Don't feel bad about using a macro for this, the steep slopes "feature" is just there as a vestige of the Premium Account system in Wurm Online and is terrible game design anyway.

PROTIP 8: Puppeteering is the key to the secret of Wurm. There is hidden content you can only access through Puppeteering. Yoyos, however, are worthless.

PROTIP 9: You can create Groups in the inventory menu to sort items. There's no need to use containers just for sorting. Right click the top of the inventory menu and create a group.

PROTIP 10: Your starting tent can be used as a bandage. Actually, your starting tent should be used as a bandage, because otherwise it's useless. Yes, you can set your spawn point by dropping your tent, but THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU DROP IT IN YOUR KINGDOM'S TERRITORY. DON'T DROP YOUR FUCKING TENT ON THE GROUND RANDOMLY LIKE A NIGGER REFUGEE. YOU WILL NOT RESPAWN THERE UNLESS IT'S IN KINGDOM INFLUENCE, AND IF IT IS, THAT MEANS YOU'RE NEAR A DEED AND WILL RESPAWN THERE ANYWAY. TENTS DROPPED ON THE GROUND ARE CONSIDERED FREE BANDAGES FOR ANYONE TO TAKE.

Gee, it's almost as if using an 8k map for a server with 1 town per kingdom at most, meant to be focused on PVP which relies on people running into each other, in a game with so few resources you can spread them all out in a 2k map with lots of room inbetween, makes no sense.

I appreciate the time spent making it but I think it's pretty boring. Exploring won't be fun because you can just point a cart in a direction and you will end up at point b without any input. You can't build anything nice on the center brick (besides on the summit) because when you try to flatten the terrain the cliffs will become really sheer and require a gigantic dig skill and hundreds of dirt for each corner. It really looks more like a PVP arena map, those specialty maps with high skill gain and resets every month. Sklotopolis's Novus is an idea of a map I think is good, it's my favorite map.

On the plus side, it's the most accurate depiction of hills I've seen yet.

It would still be an issue. I honestly would take another shot at making a map if I was you, especially since you learned how to make it so you can try again. Maybe a 3k-4k map.

Take a look at some livemaps of popular servers, they host them on their website. Mythmoor and Sklotopolis both have three to look at and you can get ideas for what layouts tend to be popular with people. If your map was smaller it would serve as a good PVP arena map at 2k but we are also Minecrafting so it gets more complicated.

To all of those who are working on making the next map for the summer(/whenever) server, I hope you're documenting this all as well for our collective guides.

This is something that interests me heavily but I'm currently focusing on the skills guides at the moment. I have pipe-dreams of making a great map one day filled with quests (small/medium/long length, quest-line/series), dungeons/towers, events, treasure hunting and other countless RPG content that would make the server more interesting to play in but that's only after I've mastered the basics of this game.

I'm nearly finished on my in-depth guide for Foraging and will most likely start on Botanizing as it is somewhat similar and easy.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the third guide that I should work on? Preferably an easy resource gathering skill. I was thinking of either doing woodcutting/digging/mining but l haven't made up my mind at this point. Let me know what you think is an easy guide for me to do or if you have a better suggestion.

8k map is not doable with the player count these servers get,artifacts are found fast due to macroing and the use of alts,size has nothing to do with it.4k has been tried and true in the past,smooth hills while great in theory do more harm than good in practice and renders climbing completely irrelevant,the map is a nightmare,look to maps that've been used in the past or in different servers for inspiration.

A 2k map is too small while an 8k one is too large,a 4k map is big enough to accommodate hermits,splinter communities,primary towns,construction projects and still leave enough room for the admin to terraform/build.

The idea of transversing a desert or a forest for an hour while appealing just isn't fun ingame,you're either driving and dodging mobs or you slap emote and shitpost in chat,for a fucking hour,and this is your average trip to anything worth getting to in an 8k map.

With the fag count being 30 at serb's peak on average a 4k map is big enough.
