What do you anons think about space engineers? I've got about 550 hours in it and while i do have fun, developer stagnation is getting a little annoying despite the fact that I've more than gotten the value for my money.
Also, in other news, I'm going to request (if someone will humor me) an old 2D space game that was freeware, but I can't remember the name. The world was sectioned off into quadrants I think by some kind of laser barrier; you could terraform planets, colonize them, all kinds of stuff. Pretty sure there were planet buster weapons, and a few different ship sprites and races to choose from.

Starsector is tremendously fun. There is a lot of complexity to it, but the tooltips all do a great job of explaining shit. Don't be a (honest) trader because you'll get hit with a 30% tariff on the buying and selling ends of things (unless you're smuggling). The combat is the best thing about the game IMO, and largely centers around keeping your ship in good positioning, managing your flux levels, and knowing when to slam the enemy with everything. Navigating the campaign map is my other favorite part about this game; you're dodging through hyperspace storms, hiding with systems dark in a nebula, running from interdicting pirates, etc. It's nice that you're doing meaningful stuff while going from point A to point B. The carrier mechanics are good (but if you give them certain weapons loadouts the AI charges in like a battlecruiser, next update will fix it). I've spent an unholy amount of time in the ship refit's simulator, testing all kinds of ship permutations. I'd say bounty hunting and deep space salvage ops are the way to go in the game right now. Smuggling is an effective early game strategy (and you'll need it because supplies and fuel eat money). You can also build gimmick ships (usually phase cloaking ships), which are very satisfying to pull off, but not quite game-breaking. Do your first playthrough on vanilla, second playthrough modded (some mods, like SCY, are god-tier). Overall it's one of my favorite games ever, and you should definitely play it.

During the last beta a player bugged out the engineering effect for dirty drives, this allowed him to hit speeds far greater then should have been possible. That's pretty fuckin radical, BUT if it required a relog it's definitely just a case of instancing. The case I read said that the person managed to get to the navigation point, but there wasn't a system there- Like every system is its own instance and the nav markers are just a dot on the empty grid beyond.

It does still calculate the distances accurately, to be fair, but it won't load anything from that system. Hopefully some space sim will let us travel uninterrupted at relativistic speeds to nearby systems. It honestly wouldn't be too hard to patch in for E:D, but there's no real point to spending 3 days in supercruise when you can just jump there in 10 seconds.

Combat looks trash. You spend 99% of your time missing shots, and the time to kill an NPC is unforgivably long. Strikes me as another case of "we sacrificed all gameplay in the name of multiplayer 'balance.'" I don't think anybody cares that much for having massive multiplayer in space, just give us a good co-op game where we can work in a wing and have fun blowing shit up. Maybe have the host player guide a flagship around the map, maybe. Why do developers not understand this?

The longer drawn out 1 on 1 fights (in addition to great dogfight AI) is part of what made Freespace 1 and 2 so good. Having an actual battle instead of just "lol I saw you first". It is immensely disappointing when playing any other game involving a space fighter and the enemies go down in only a second or two after flying in a very predictable straight line, it's like if the intro to a song was played and then just stopped abruptly.
662db6 No.14604588
>>14604455
I agree with you to an extent, but several minutes against a single, unexceptional NPC in a large-scale battle is too much. I'd say 20-60 seconds of dogfight time for unimportant NPC's in a large battle is ideal. The really long drawn out battles with Dragon fighters were probably the least interesting part of Freespace (haven't gotten around to FS2 yet). Elite enemies, particularly plot-related ones, make sense for longer engagements, especially when 1-on-1. In the gameplay footage shown, this was not the case, nor was it a smaller engagement. In addition, the long time to kill, combined with the density of ships, means you will likely have to change to another target before killing anything (not always the case, but often enough that it tangibly detracts from a sense of accomplishment; reducing the shields of numerous foes is nowhere near as interesting as killing a handful).
I think the main fault in the gameplay shown is caused by the lack of accuracy of the weapons; we see the pilot constantly trying to do these precise little edging movements to have a slight chance of hitting his target. The game could stand to benefit greatly from a slight auto-aim system along the lines of X3 or HotDS, which also has the benefit of making the game more HOTAS-friendly.

People who call for lower TTK in any game deserve the noose.
Speaking of low TTK, I was thinking just now about crowdsourcing together a custom vanilla-like soundtrack for X3 since all you need to do is to drop the files in the folder for them to work. Problem with most music additions is that theyre either royalty free garbage or just plain shit.
The only hard criteria would be that it has to be ambient/psybient or similar genres with tribal and and/or aquatic elements. Combat music naturally has a lot more leeway because it has to be in stark contrast to the rest of the otherwise slow or mellow tracks.
You fags feel free to suggest tracks and Ill sort and compile them in a paste later. Webbum related would constitute a possible candidate with slight alterations for example, since it uses aquatic elements and at times even the same samples as the original X3 OST.

What is the gameplay for starsector exactly?
I take a mission and creep through nebula to somewhere, run low on supplies then salvage some more, complete mission, go all the way back, creeping to avoid pirates. Now I buy a better ship and do it again? I mean it's fairly fun but it's not relaxing or crazy.
Also combat is weird because all AI wanders the map like crazy. If I join battle to help ai runs away. Then same almost happens with me I just leave all the time and most pirates can do nothing. This is probably because it's on easy mode but it seems a bit frustrating and almost exactly like in M&B how unless you were in mods/large battles, roaming around was just kiting and chasing kiters all the time.

For the very early game, I would recommend scrounging around battle sites between larger fleets for wrecks, hugging close to big guys to keep safe. Work towards a small fuel tanker, a small cargo ship, and or 2 military vessels. This should be enough to start doing probe/derelict missions in deep space in a profitable manner. (Unshielded) Probe enemies have W+Mouse1 AI and are meant for beginners. There are other ways to get started, but this is probably the most reliable for a beginner's first playthrough. Sustained burn is usually enough to evade pirates; I rarely use emergency burns outside of getting jumped at the hyperspace gate.

Glad you're having more fun now. High level combat skills are ridiculously OP if used right (read: gimmick ships). High level enemies get them (the skills) too which makes things interesting. Bounty hunting is a more exciting way to go in current version if you can avoid the death. That said, there is a certain charm when you can do multi-month long salvage+survey expeditions, only occasionally returning to dump off 5 million credits' worth of stuff in the late game.
My one major gripe that comes up in mid-late game is that there is a level cap at 40. If you've invested in scrapping and leadership, it can potentially exclude you from the joys of doing ludicrous bullshit with tiny ships (vid related; Hyperion is wife material) or hinder you immensely in fights with big scary endgame things (more important in modded than vanilla, honestly). You may want to increase the level cap in \Starsector\starsector-core\data\config\settings.json by switching "playerMaxLevel" up to 100; the XP requirements still ramp up geometrically so it's not really game-breaking.
Also you might be interested in the target leading pip mod here http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=7921.0

For early game, it's best to attach every ship in your fleet with a safety override module. When you do that, it ensures that fights last shorter than 2 minutes, they only get longer in mid game.
