The correct solution is to make some kind of "Switch Lite", that actually IS a portable (as opposed to the giant brick that some people still want to pretend is a portable.) Improve the battery life, shrink the whole thing, and attach an HDMI port to it so you can hook it up directly to your TV rather than going through the dock. Basically, what the Vita should have been.
Alternately, they could go in the opposite direction - abandon all pretense of "portability" and make it a much better console, by having all the processing power be in the dock rather than the screen/tablet, by having the touchscreen actually support a stylus, by allowing you to have the tablet on as a second screen during the gameplay, allowing for touchscreen support and innovative design possibilities.
Oh wait, they already did that, it was called the Wii U. (Why they made their next console such a giant step backwards is still baffling.)

There won't be a major hardware upgrade, but a new hardware revision will fix some of the hardware bugs (like warping due to heat). Nintendo has a bad habit of charging you the cost of new hardware in order to patch hardware issues.

The PSP is a relatively simple console/handheld. Nintendo products are not so straightforward. The DS/3DS family, Wii and Wii U (and, in time, the Switch) are a huge pain in the ass to set up because of gimmicky motion controls, touchpad/touchscreen support, gyroscoping, etc. And that's assuming you're not having problems getting the audio drivers to work properly and tweaking all of the graphical settings to view the game properly like any other emulator.

It will be a long time before that happens. Right now Dolphin is the best Gamecube and Wii emulator, and it has a team of experienced developers that have been working on it for over a decade now.
