I have never been a huge fan of Kirby on account of it being so painfully simple. Have played the demo, my first impressions were poor but for some reason, I kept replaying it and find it oddly addictive. I never pre-order games and often wait for a mount after release to determine if I want to buy. If I'm not interested at that point then it goes on my buy on sale list, and if I still don't want it on sale then I don't even bother. If its PC, I private as a preview and then buy if it's actually good.

From the demo, star allies seems even more simple than most Kirby games. I was expecting a return to the N64 style ability combos, not "apply fire/water/ice to a weapon for damage boost!" Okay but it's still the same weapon and I could be activating the same puzzles with the element ability alone. What's the point really? It better get a lot more complex, fast. I also hope it'll have a lot of bonus stuff that's harder to unlock than simply completing the levels, but I know I'll be disappointed since (((modern Nintendo))) keeps splitting off every tiny little fresh idea into its own 3DS game to milk that as long as possible.

I don't often give a fuck about reviews, but I just read a bunch of the blurbs on metacritic and it sounds pretty much like I feared. Too simple, even for a Kirby game. All the good points it's getting are nostalgia, pity, or "it's fun with friends/your wife's kids!" Frankly it sounds toddler-tier and I'm not into spending $60 to be treated like a preschooler. One of them mentioned bonus stages that make better use of the combos, but there apparently aren't enough of them to offset the rest of the game, and the entire experience only lasts a few hours.

You don't have to use friends in most cases, and they give you the chance to get rid of them before boss fights. Also, the AI really is not that aggressive. They almost always wait a couple seconds before attacking anything to make sure you don't want to swallow it or something. It's way easier to just actually fight and kill the enemies yourself. It really does not make it any easier than before.

Tried beating the "Hard" demo level with nothing but Kirby and his basic ability (only using Friends for sections where I couldn't get rid of them), and it was still pretty easy. Here's my take on the lore based on the boss descriptions and shit.
Using information from Magolor and Star Dream, we know there was an ancient scientific civilization that created some of the super-powerful technology we see in the games, like the Starcutter and the NOVA units. Hyness said his civilization dealt with a galactic disaster in the ancient past, which in this case probably refers to Void Termina. The implication is that they sealed it away, and then the ancient scientific civilization threw them onto a distant planet and suppressed them with their technology as a way to mitigate the threat. Over time, they harnessed their magic and decided to let lose Void Termina as an act of revenge (who may or may not be under their control).
Based on the boss design and the pause screen descriptions, I get the sense that they're pulling something like Zelda's Demise in Kirby. Void Termina is an undying being that's reborn into new forms whenever it's destroyed, but it can be reincarnated as good or evil depending on positive or negative energy. Given that Void Termina looks like both Kirby and Dark Matter, Kirby is a positive reincarnation, and Zero is a negative one. Whether bosses like Drawcia are new incarnations of Void Termina or just corrupted by Dark Matter is anyone's guess.

The game was most likely rushed (in terms of squeaky clean optimization), so they cut back a bit and played the safe route at 30. Remember, Kirby: Planet Robobot had frame drops during gameplay at times as well.

In terms of difficulty, it's even easier which can be slightly frustrating. The ultra transformation equivalents - like the friend circles and what not - are individually not as impressive, but there are so many smaller types of "not quite ultra" powers like ice-curling for example that are there to make up for it. The problem with that, is that there isn't any theme music or dramatic level changes to accomodate those powers because of their more "free" nature in terms of when and where they can be used.
One thing I'm noticing, though I haven't finished the game, is that the music does not seem to be nearly as good as the past few Kirby games (not including Rainbow Curse, which I didn't play) Planet Robobot, Triple Deluxe, and RtDL's soundtracks were exceptional. Not a single track I've heard has really jumped out at me so far.

The thing I like about my favorite entries is that despite how easy they are, they have tons of extra shit to find/unlock. Epic Yarn had 3 or 4 extra stages per world, that had to be unlocked by getting platinum medals on the regular ones if I remember right. Sure it was impossible to die, but to get Platinum you had to avoid taking damage. And it had so many more levels in general, with interesting design and ideas. Triple Deluxe was pretty standard gameplay but it had semi-challenging bosses and a TTGL-style escalation in the storyline that was just ridiculous (in a good way). Star Allies is just solidly mediocre and can't keep my attention.

Well, which is it? Do you have a good rip of the Epic Yarn OST already? It always soothes my autism when I'm having a flare-up. Could upload for you, as well as my preferred mix of songs if you're interested I'm getting pretty bored with it too, and find myself hoping that it will end soon. I'm only on the last level of the 3rd world, and the end does feel close. I really wish that Rick, Coo, and Kine were already in the game - they shouldn't have rushed it out the door before they were added. Those were my childhood buds, and it just makes the game feel that much less complete on a first impression.
Having played a couple more hours, the lack of music is really really starting to stand out, too. There are only a small handful of "original" songs (i.e. remixes of older songs, but with the "star allies" instrumentation) and even those sound flat, uninspired, and boring compared to the hype as fuck remixes in Planet Robobot, like Dark Castle.
I still like the game and feel like it really would be a phenomenal title to play with friends - much more so than RtDL, the problem is that I'm a grown-up age, so I don't have sleepovers friends or anything anymore. The potential of this game at something like a sleepover is reminding me that I will never feel the joy of childhood again. It's a bit disappointing. I've finished the first planet super fast, and apparently there's three total? What the fuck, that's not 60$ worth of content. The game is not bad, but it could've been better thought out. As it is, you can vore and remove your allies/friends anyway, so I guess Kirby is (((greatest ally))) tier friend. It'd be better if you chose whom you go out with at the start of a mission, and everything could be solved by everyone through different ways so there's a point to the party rather than "you need X to get Y/achieve secret, you have to replace one of your faggots" Too easy for my taste, but at least it is comfy.

I'd recommend emulating Dream Land 2 via Super Game Boy. That way you can have proper colors and the SGB border.
Also if you play Adventure, play the 3DS Classics version. Nightmare is an OK remake but has a drastically different artstyle that can be hit or miss. The 3DS Classic version is completely faithful to the orginal, adds 3D, and removes slowdown. Also it's pixel perfect.

I'm in the same boat, and actually returned it when I realized how boring it was.
The main problem was highlighted in >>14502942 but this game really is designed around four player couch co-op, to the point where it feels like single player was an afterthought.
What got me to drop the game so quickly though was how lackluster the bosses were. I never played RtDL, but Triple Deluxe and Robobot's bosses were all absolutely fucking phenomenal, to the point where I could probably remember the patterns still, just because I loved fighting them so much.
But in Star Allies, due to the game expecting you to come in with 4 players, the attacks are really uninvolved. I actually tried fighting meta knight as just Kirby, and was shocked at how simultaneously bare bones, and overwhelming the attacks could be. I swear there was a game recently, that just chucked multiple enemies at you, instead of really making an interesting boss, and that's what it felt like when I got rid of all the friends.
Don't get me wrong, Triple Deluxe and Robobot were both still very "damn near plays itself" in simplistic mechanics. You still basically did the same thing.

I was guessing that they only did that for the event where you have 4 non-cpu characters on screen - they're going to be way more active than the cpu characters, so there's going to be a lot more overhead. That's the only thing I can think of.

I have no idea how the gameplay or overall design somehow gave that impression at the castle stage (I'm the anon you're referring to who mentioned the MP-centerdness of the title)
BUT
I will say that after the castle, there's a 4th space-based map that is pretty large, pretty fun/challenging, and that the final boss really made everything feel worth it - again - even though it was piss easy.
It unlocked the time attack and boss-run modes which I'm now having fun with. I don't regret my purchase anymore. I never would've expected such an up and down from a Kirby title, but that's kind of my final take on it.

I knew this beforehand, but tbqh, it was a beta design, and should've stayed as a beta design. Even though it's a big LE EASTER EGG FANS WILL GET THIS moment, I just think the design itself is kind of underwhelming. One of the problems is it kind of is a whole lot less "solid" than meta or galacta knight's design, if you understand what I'm saying. But that's just my opinion.

It's been known that he's actually a good fragment of Dark Matter. The LORE part would be that he has all of Kirby's powers, the only thing being different being that he uses his tongue to steal the powers, not a vacuum like Kirby.

I think Morpho Knight has two main problems.
First, I think they should have done a normal Galacta Knight fight first with the Morpho Knight powerup being his second phase. With the amount of damage a team can do in this game you can absolutely chew through boss health bars – at least with two phases, you'd get somewhat of a challenge.
Second, he doesn't actually do anything nearly as impressive as Galacta Knight.
Outside of standard Meta Knight attacks they both use, Galacta Knight:
>Shoots rebounding sword beams that do chip damage
>Summons lightning
>Calls in his squad to fuck you up
>Tears holes in spacetime with his lance
>Boss theme is fucking amazing
In comparison, Morpho Knight is really underwhelming.
>Makes his sword bigger and slashes a couple times, leaving him vulnerable to a massive amount of damage while he sits in place
>Purple flaming ghost projectiles that, while looking fucking cool, move so slowly and predictably they're not threatening
>Omnislash, that again, while cool, is so telegraphed you pretty much need to walk into it. Later in the phase he'll teleport while charging to try and catch you with it, but it could really use multiple teleport fake-outs like Sectonia for mindgames.
>Meta Knight tornado doesn't even cross the screen normally but instead sits in the background harmlessly for a while. Usually happens so late in the fight that most players will never see it.
>Bug buzz – this attack is actually alright. The range and teleports make it a legitimate threat.
>Low key boss theme that lacks the impact of Galacta Knight's rock. It's alright, but not groundbreaking.
The effects on his teleports and moves are nice, but most of his attacks need to be significantly quicker for him to pose even a smidgeon of a threat. I know all Kirby bosses having a beam attack of some sort is almost a running joke at this point, but he really needed something quick and screen-clearing. Even setting the ground on fire with his sword would have been fine.

Triple deluxe was a better game for me. TD had more enjoyable music, the gimmic of the "OP POWER" was more enjoyable in TD, as opposed to the robobot which made me miss animal friends and frustrated me when I couldn't hop out of it at will. It also felt better using the hypernova vs the past bosses as opposed to the rather pathetic wannabe R-type repeat of the same thing.
I'll also never forgive Robobot for that fucking asshole move at the end of the true arena that punishes you with instant death when you beat the final boss if you didn't read a strategy guide beforehand. That fucking shit is inexcusable

Yes, it was the only one thing you could do with it, but as I said, the Robobot, while more varied, only made me mad that Animal Friends weren't around, who were MORE varied than the robobot and that the robobot was feeling like a weak substitute for.
Adding to it, the whole "final stretch OP" moment actually had some impact with TD (Hypernova-ing the sub bosses then devouring Flowery Woods), as opposed to Robobot (do the jet sequence that you've done a dozen times before, not noticing the foes you're shooting are bosses because the perspective has changed so they don't quite look the same).
If you prefer Robobot, that's fine. I felt that it was trying to ape TD's flow too much and failing to capture the charm.
