One of the better payed mmos which isn't really saying much mind. There is a free trial or you can get ARR as you won't be able to access the later expansions until you finish the mainline quest anyway but if you don't like it early on, you most likely won't like the rest of the game. Be warned that Stormblood reworked classes however a few jobs feel shit to play early on.
The community varies between servers but most are pretty welcoming to newfags and the game will handhold you a fuck ton. Story is pretty hit and miss but there is some good shit in there. You can swap jobs on the fly, can have all of them on a single character and gain an exp boost for any job under your highest level so having alts are purely there for either mules for crafting autism or erp.
Avoid Balmung and Mateus like the plague.

nothing, because there are no more "sub-class" skills. there are now "role" skills, which are shared based upon your general role in the game; tank, healer, ranged dps, caster, melee dps.

up until 60, then yes. after that it's a mix of dungeons, roulettes and pvp, with pvp taking precedence for dps and dungeons for tanks/healers. roulettes should always be done at least once a day for the xp bonus.

RDM is piss-easy to play, since your entire gimmick is casting short-duration spells to proc Dualcast, and instacast the long-duration higher damage spells. Keep doing that to fill your mana meter, then do a charge in, couple sword swings, and backflip out to start over. All of the additional powers focus on speeding up the process. (i.e. Manafication doubles your current mana levels and resets your charge-in/backflip timers)
They do get a interesting bit of team utility in that they can cast a decent heal, and eventually can even rez. They're actually better for raising than healers since they just have to get Dualcast for an instant res and can do it multiple times in a row, leaving healers to focus on healing/dps.
RDM spells all have a high potency that makes them constantly rip aggro up to level 60 dungeons, after which tank and other dps abilities catch up in damage output. Popping emnity reduction powers is needed unless you like getting hit.
The RDM 70 job outfit seems pretty good.

It's the classic MMO monster grind. Kill enemies to level up to kill stronger enemies.
Going in solo is doable, but combat will take ages and you'll end every fight against an equal level enemy nearly dead unless you're a tank. Attacking anything above your level is not an option. You will probably die if you attempt it.
Grouping up means mobs die quicker, but every additional party member means the exp gained is split. Grouping up also means you can fight mobs several levels higher than your party. Crowd control is actually useful in case your party members are stupid and keep running into or attacking additional mobs, but odds are they'll just break that crowd control anyways because some people see two mobs and go "time for aoe spam!".
Once you ding level 6, which takes a total of around 50,000 EXP (you typically gain 50-100 per equal level enemy), you can actually lose 25% of the total EXP to reach the next level by dying and choosing to return to the spawn point. At 6, hitting 7 requires 36,000 or so, so each time you die you will lose up to 9,000 EXP if nobody rezzes you. That amount increases for every level, naturally, and starting at 11 you can actually lose levels from this.
Also FATEs are here too, and it seems like there are triggers to activate them. Somebody is probably going to have all the triggers worked out in about a week. Also, FATEs give like 2,500-5,000 EXP at the levels I've seen them, so odds are once those triggers are figured out the whole experience will become an even bigger zergfest than it already is.

The triggers are, in general, to kill certain mobs in large numbers. Some of them will only spawn during certain weather patterns, but there don't seem to be any more complicated spawn triggers thus far.

I'm new to this game and have no idea what the fuck I'm doing. Level 17 Gladiator and level 12 Conjurer right now, how do I go about levelling up when I've run out of most readily available quests? Fates seem to be very slow, and even then I'm not high enough level to do the very good fates, and it looks like I'm gonna be stuck with ugly as fuck armor sets until I grind all the way up to max level. I believe I got it to work on mint or fucking Ubuntu. Everything else was too much of a hassle. The problem ended up being that while the game worked 1.) Fps was shit 2.) Moving your camera resulted in green lines everywhere and blurred textures. Play it on windows and suck it up

Anon, all gear in this game is completely meaningless. It mainly functions as a difficulty curve for Savage content.
But yes, you should only do Eureka if you enjoy the content or are really hot for the relic as glamour. Although it's worth mentioning that this time around it seems like it will be pretty easy to get additional relic once you've acquired the first one, meaning decent gear for alts without crafting/gil requirements or hard weekly caps.

agreed. the initial grind is rough, but once you're in the teens you can farm anemos crystals easily via the NM train, and that means loads of protean crystals without too much work. for doing it maybe a total of 12 hours since patch, i almost have my warriors augmented +2 weapon, and i'm only elemental level 9.

ive done sam, drg, war, drk and ast. war is hildibrand-tier in terms of seriousness, but it's good fun. sam, ast and drg are all good overall, with some heartwarming/funny moments in ast/drg and a bit more of the "honorable seriousness" for sam. but none of them hit you in the feels like drk does.
the nicest thing about sam is once you're done with the final quest the Seikeiseigumi actually treat you like a person. the little post-quest dialogue changes are a nice touch.

Stormblood in my opinion was fine when it came out, now I think that it's just a worst Heavensward, though if you buy it, you'll get Heavensward with it so I would go for it if you like the game, as Heavensward content really is 10/10 in story.
BLM is a good class and is currently the highest dealing DPS, you'll see them in a couple speed kill DPS parties, just know that they have little to no utility.

I can't speak for Stormblood but I finished Heavensward myself maybe some two nights ago and it's really good! Shits all over ARR's excuse of a plot and manages to make your wol actually look like a competent hero that's good for something other than fetch quests. It also includes some of my favourite dungeons and sidequests/NPCs, along with some cool beast tribes and obtainable mounts. Made me fall in love with the game all over again.
