The almost all of mission areas have different routes to take in the area. The silenced pistol is pin point sniper accurate, but you can't move bodies, combined with the fact there are a bunch of troops it naturally becomes something you use when you need that is also incredibly reliable, but not something you can abuse (like silent weapons in every other game). Even the silent sniper is super reliable (one hit kill no matter what), but you get 3 shots so you can only really use it for key targets like snipers. Something it has in common with Thief is it isn't slow as shit. You can run in certain situations (sometimes have to, to avoid snipers or patrols), but it's also risky. You have to be smart. Although, in this day and age of Dishonored players who want to teleport everywhere, maybe that's a downside.

I never had the invisible infront of a guard thing happen, but there are 2 massive quirks with stealth in FC2 that you have to play around.
1. Foilage is finicky as fuck for cover. Hide behind walls, cars, etc.
2. Monolithic AI. This was something I actually complained about in a stealth thread without specifying what game and got called a casual, but this really is the most cancerous thing in stealth games that exists. If one AI sees you, even if he doesn't say anything or dies the second he does, they all know where you are. It also makes losing the AI hard as fuck.
Everything else is usually something the player hasn't accounted for, like snipers (who don't have a laser sight) giving your position away.

You could not be more wrong. Land a perfect headshot with the dart gun(the quietest gun in the game) at it's maximum range(because hitscan but the dart just doesn't fucking work past a certain range) and his buddies will immediately know where you are, start shooting at you and driving their trucks in your direction.
Same thing happens if you slash someone with the machete or use any of the silenced weapons. They're all suddenly on full alert and know exactly where you are. The only time stealth works in Far Cry 2 is you do it completely non-lethally. Since this ain't Metal Gear where doing so is rewarded, makes the stealth fucking pointless and therefore trash.
Saying that Far Cry 2 has good stealth is a fucking insult and I won't stand for it.

I liked Instincts, 3, and 4. Particularly Instincts. It had a map editor. When I played on the original Xbox there was a really good map community where people were dedicated to making mazes and obstacles courses that climbed into the air. It was some really imaginative stuff and puts shit like Halo Forge to shame.

There's a good game trapped in every AAA shitpile, buried under garbage and struggling to get out. Most of the time that good game gets smothered to death by developer incompetence or crushed under the sheer weight of executive demand for the next yearly franchise cash cow. But sometimes, that good game gets a chance to surface, to scrabble to the top of the pile of chest-high-walls and mediocre shooting mechanics, and it screams for help: "Get me out of here!" it cries, "I don't want to be trash!"
