I have to ask what kind of bubble you've been stuck in, because saying Pokemon isn't a big deal is just outright delusional. Even if you focus solely on the games (ignoring the massive amounts of generated content, anime, tv shows, movies, card games, products) they still rack up some of the highest sales figures.
A series can be popular without being good, if you're trying to virtue signal something.

I'm saying its a 20th as big as it was 20 years ago. It has penetration where it started, card games, video games and anime. The anime is incredibly small these days, the card game is a footnote and is even smaller than yugioh and magic, and even the games have lost a lot of their momentum with how they sequelize releases and end up making mainline games even the casual fans don't like.
I'm not interested if it's good or bad, I'm just providing an observation. I personally haven't played a pokemon game since gsc and have no interest in playing them again.

Half of that shit is a fad that will disappear in 5 years time.
The only ones that are going to have staying power are furries and bronies, and community driven websites. Superwholock and Rick and Morty die with the show, and based off the troubles Rick and Morty has been under who knows if there will be a fourth season. Homestuck is finished, right? So that will die out. Undertale will die out unless it gets a sequel, but the sequel will never live up to the hype and at worst it'll turn into Five Nights at Freddy's.
Problem is, there is already a brony show coming that makes it an anime-style magical girl series, so they ain't goin' no where.

I used to, like twenty years ago when I was a child. I read PC Gamer, and going by their rating and whether or not the game was something interesting to me, I'd buy it or not. They would actually talk about game mechanics and compare it to similar games. I bought a fair bit of trash, but mostly classics.
Example: I was subscribed to one of Columbia House CD deals for a little while (where you agreed to be sent a new CD every month and if you didn't send it back, they would charge you. very happy those don't exist anymore), except instead of music CDs it was for PC games. They sent me Red Alert one month and I was about to send it back because I had no idea what it was, but I looked at trusty PC Gamer and found it was a really good game, so I asked my mom to let me keep it.
I ended up pouring countless hours into Red Alert. I'd play it so often that my mother can recall what it sounds like when you click on and order a unit. She still teases me about "Unit Reporting!" "Acknowledged!"
RA is a great game, and I would've sent it back, but PC Gamer told me "no dude, it's a good game, really" and they were right.
That's why it hurts to see gaming journalism talk about sexism because of boobs or stupid shit. I'm sure it was always corrupt, but at least it used to be helpful. Now PC Gamer tells me how Gone Home led them home but they already home or some stupid shit.

This was before the hobby went truly mass-market and everything was ruined. Fuck, this hit me hard. I had a core group of dudes, and we did LAN parties at least once a month from 1997-2004. About 8 of us, and we always rotated hosting for each other.
Eventually, I moved out of state for college. The crew broke up, some dudes got married, got girlfriends, enlisted in the military, got office jobs, and the LAN lifestyle was no more. I miss it dearly.
This is probably something I would just do forever if I won the lottery or something. Just host LAN parties for friends who want to escape and basically be irresponsible 19-year-olds again.

Theres certainly some hope for a return to quality with the slightly older fashioned style shooters popping up, 'Retro' indie games falling out of fashion, and normalfags getting up in arms about gambling and DLC. Not to mention platformers seeing a bit more love again.
Its not 100%, but if loot boxes go illegal you know companies will pump up prices until nobody buys their shit anymore, a crash happens, and the people who want to make money will have to work for it again.

You're full of shit, but it's a nice dream. The game market is too well entrenched to crash again like it did in it's infancy, and too global to be affected much by local trends.
The best we can hope for at this point is that as more and more games go the route of live services, you'll see a sub-market emerge within the larger market at writ which resembles the classic model. Populated largely either by companies specifically catering to a targeted demographic, or new experimental IPs that don't justify the live service investment, or smaller indie studios who can't afford/secure a live service partnership - or are just hobbyist devs. It'll very much be like a "secret club" where you have to dig and pay attention to find new titles - and god forbid if one of them goes viral, then the franchise is ruined since the influx of popularity would make it a prime target for exploitation/"enhanced monitisation" via the injection of the live service cancer.

Hah, nice one. I was able to pull one over on BMG as well, doing the same thing except with cassette tapes. The problem was, they didn't register a "return" - so they charged me anyhow, and then they kept sending me shit I didn't order since I think there was some kind of opt-out form you had to fill in occasionally and send back or they would automatically charge you. Ended up amassing a $400 bill from them, so I got my parents involved, since they knew nothing about it initially. Basically, they entered into a predatory contract with a minor, and while I did lie initially about my age to get signed up - they sure as fuck didn't want to have it go to court where those predatory practices could be scrutinized in light of being leveraged against a child (well, teen, but whatever).
Would have ended up with a shit-ton of free cassettes, but my dad made me send most of them back. So all I got to keep was a few of the legitimate ones I paid for early on, and the bootleg copies I made of the shit they sent.
