The only game that gives me the closest experience I've played so far is unironically world of warcraft, it's complete trash, but from what little I played at least I got to ride around on a skeletal horse. Also dominions has all kinds of stuff like this, but it's a strategy game and I can't really get into the immersion of being a character.

I vaguely remember playing that because it was on the CD of a video game magazine I used to buy. It felt so unpolished that I stopped playing and deleted it after an hour or so, IIRC.

Well, uh.

Yes.

It is indeed more polished, but it's not actually better and I speak from experience here.

For starters, it lacks most of the Gothic 1 and 2 like charm that first one had. Kinda clunky, very ambitious, tries its best with what it has but is very much imperfect.

TW2 is still jank, but it's polished jank. Which doesn't make it better, it just makes it more slippery like a marble floor. A lot like Gothic 3, really, if I were to continue with my analogy. It's not bad per se, it's not worse technically(quite the opposite) but it feels like ass in comparison.

HoMM3 has a Death Knight as a hero class and they know Necromancy as a skill. Though, it's not very "tactical" in that sense (but it's a deep enough game), but you don't really interact directly like that
