I've been playing the first Descent recently and I really, really like it. The fluid movement, all the dodging, the sick music, it's pretty damn rad. I already have the second and third games ready once I'm done with the first, but I'd like to know what other games exist in the genre? I've heard of Overload but it's early access so for now I'm not going near it, what else is good?

There's Forsaken, but outside of that you won't find a whole lot of games in this genre. There's some other indie examples, but most of them I know of are of the roguelite shit kind with crappy levels and progression to boot. Overload is slated for release in May according to the devs, so you won't have to wait too long for it.

Every spaceflight sim in theory, but too much freedom means you don't appreciate it.

Do the Aquanox games count as 6DoF? Admittedly they're on my backlog and I haven't gotten around to playing them yet, so I'm not sure if the movement controls go in ALL 6 directions but it seems like it might be something you're interested in.

I was hyped back when the Wii, then the PS Move, shipped, yielding platforms equipped with controllers rivaling the SpaceBall controllers beloved by many Descent players. It should've been at least like the small but steady burst of nouveau lightgun games, right?

But nope! Not a single one shipped, not even the quickie cashgrab Wiiware port of the first two Descent games that Interplay promised alongside a bunch of similar efforts (like the Wii port of MDK2 that actually materialized). I'll never be able to figure out why the motion fad came and went without 6DoF FPSs making any kind of comeback, but hopefully the VR meme will give it a second chance, assuming soiboi pantywaists unwilling to conquer their motion sickness don't sink it again.

Aside from Descent & Forsaken, there was also Terminal Velocity/Fury³/Hellbender. Maybe Yager, Terracide, and G-Police as well.

>>14363385

Yeah, the key differentiator is that it takes place substantially in tunnel-heavy FPS-esque indoor levels.

The first Aquanox is like a 4.5DoF strangely enough. For some nonsensical reason, they only allow you to look up and down at 90 degree angles and then stop you like if you were playing an FPS. It's infuriating and fucking awkward being stopped dead like that while tracking a ship moving above or below you, it also doesn't allow you to rotate. Surprisingly decent writing, really unique underwater cyberpunk setting and they also did their homework on how things work underwater. Though the voice acting ranges from bad to absolutely fucking horrible, skip to 1:20 on vid. Okay game aside from those flaws though.

I'm playing through the sequel right now and it's a big improvement overall with much better voice acting and cool art style, it also allows you to pitch up and down 360 degrees now like it should have in the first fucking place. It allows you to rotate if you choose sim mode but its permanently stuck on the x axis and doesn't allow you to map it to your joystick twist axis, so you have to use the keyboard to aim left and right which is fucking retarded, just stick to FPS mode. The protag is a bit of a bitch right now (got cucked out of his own ship and now works for the people that stole it) but I'm pretty sure it's just so he can grow into a badass throughout the game (I hope).

I remember how I played Descent for the first time 2-3 years ago.

Somehow it always eluded me before.

After the 3rd or 4th mission I always needed a break since my heart was racing like hell.

There is a game before Aquanox in the series, called Archimedean Dynasty. In it you play Emerald "Deadeye" Flint, too. It's designed to be played with Keyboard + Flightstick, but if I remember correctly, you movement is even more limited in it.

Gameplay wise it's still the best game in the franchise. You can move freely between nearby stations and do optional missions. There are more customizations you can do to you submarine. Overall it's pretty similar to Wing Commander Privateer.

The game is for DOS, but it can be played in high res with DOSBox versions with support for Glide wrappers and nGlide. You just have to turn off v-sync in you graphic settings and DOSBox or the loading screen will be extremely slow. You also might get heavy visual glitches if you try to force anti aliasing. The gog version is set up correctly out of the box.

Bumpan. Aquanox and Forsaken look nice, thanks anons.

>G-Police

I had that game but I can't remember anything about it, besides it having Wireframe graphics. Then I looked it up and it doesn't have wireframe graphics. What the hell?

how would you recommend playing forsaken? I always saw it at blockbuster for the 64 but I didn't know it had pc and psx releases as well.

Descent just went from a really good game to a really good game with a really fucking garbage enemy(>>14364422). Do these cunts spawn in any other levels?

Open Source port for Forsaken. It doesn't have music or cutscenes yet unfortunately but it's pretty good besides that.
