Because it was swept under the rug. They used to report WoW subs until they had a big drop, which they then stopped reporting. There are less people playing WoW than ever, yet nobody talks about it. Nobody is playing Starcraft 2 anymore, so much that they added F2P to their coop mode so people would continue to queue while the ladders remain small. Overwatch is no exception. They never report active players, only the amount of accounts that have been opened.

I knew one person who was more excited for Overwatch than anything. He was hugely disappointed and dropped it within months of launch. I played it with him and another friend who played maybe a match a day for half a year before stopping. I have yet another friend who did the same thing. Yet, the original guy who was hyped downloads the game maybe once every few months to stream it to me for a match or two and then uninstall, simply because it's become an in-joke to us. Last time, he sat in the queue for 5 minutes before just deleting the game. Healthy games don't have 5 minute queue times.

I don't doubt that there has been an effort to conceal the fall of these high-profile games. People still wander around considering them highly successful and lively games with packed communities, and it pushes people into playing them. That's precisely why I believe it IS concealed that Overwatch doesn't have a community worth mentioning anymore. Their community contains an abnormal amount of people who play it for minutes a week and people who have more fun watching streamers than actually playing.

That being said, the game isn't dead. It just has a shrinking community of little importance that will continue to fund Overwatch updates by purchasing crates and watching Blizzard-run esports competitions where shit players play shit games.

It rode the initial wave of hype and Blizzard art. Porn was a big factor but also because Blizzard are good or at least were good just this one time, at capitalizing on hype and marketing. People flocked to it and played it and it was a massive success. However, the game is shallow, a bit too on the easy side. Overwatch is still the best there is at what it does, The biggest problems are still more social issues which matchmaking compounds. A better matchmaking system that made team queuing more desirable would be a big step towards improvement, but that's never going to happen. Lot's of people are just burnt out (which is natural at this point, not a sign of the game being bad), but if they were involved in teams and shit they would probably still be playing because of that pull.

Other than that their recent attempts at balance have been a disaster. Their handling at esports has been atrocious not because "esports focus" but because they forcefully shut down every natural league in order to spotlight their own multi-million dollar shitshow.

I used to follow Soylents development when I was in college because I was enthralled by the idea of never having to manage my meals for good nutrition. I can talk for hours about how Ultis are an interesting game design that rewards players for playing their role by giving them more frequent uses and that they still require proper use to actually payoff. That they are excelent tie breaks like the Ubercharge was in TF2 but they aren't restricted to a single character.

That they work mostly like Adrenaline did in Ut2k4 but it's a more universal system that works for different roles as well.

And yet you'll still only focus on the few "one hit kill" ultis and complain that they are no-skill win buttons, ignoring all of that.

I can tell you that skills are just a design decision to give you things you can do not tied to more guns. You could have a Translocator instead of Tracer's Blink or a grapling hook instead of Widow's grappling beam or a mine layer instead of Junkrat's mines.

But having most character stick to a single gun and giving them abilities instead lets more different attacks and abilities to be included into the game. Doomfist alone would be a nightmare to include in a standard control scheme with M1 and M2 alone for his abilities for instance.

And yet you'll still talk about "low skill ceiling skill spamming" ignoring all that, because apparently having to switch guns to teleport around is more fun to you than just pressing a button to do it so you can focus on shooting instead.

I could also talk about how the focus of the game is team composition, that most of the best teams I've played against had amazing coordiantion with their ultis and skills and there were a lot of neat combos, especially with Mei setting up characters in weird spots for instance, but you'll gladly ignore that because if it's not a 1v1 deathmatch, it's a shit game because muh k/d.

Finally, some valid arguments. I'm not sure if you even read my post, or your inner autism just made you believe I'm incapable of having a realistic argument with valid points. I never said that skills are objectively bad or one-hit kills or anti-fun or whatever. I said I didn't wanna touch the subject, but since you insist, I will. Every class based shooter has skills, even if it's not pressing a button, like in tf2, it's still considered a skill, or rather part of your kit. There are many ways you can go about this. Like in tf2, where switching weapons grants new abilities/effects, and you will always have access to that set of skills at any given time, meaning the game will be balanced so that skills are not so impactful. Or, you can go down the skill button way, and introduce concepts like opportunity (that despite being present in the tf2 formula, is not as relevant) and time management. You have to minimax the time spent on cooldown with the effectiveness of your kit. It's like you said, the fun is in having different team comps and experimenting with their different match-ups. This is an extremely fun and well-tested mechanic. The problem with overwatch isn't that it uses this system, it's that it uses it poorly. The vast majority of Overwatch characters are almost exclusively defined by their skills. Take away roadhog's hook, and he's completely useless. Take away rein's shield, he's useless, take away torb's turret, sym's lasers, they all become useless. You don't even need to take them away, just have them use them normally throughout the game, and they'll go on cooldown. During this time, you feel like a dead weight. Ok, I just hooked and killed a guy with roadhog, now I need to wait these 8 or so seconds for the hook to recharge, in the meantime I'll just sit here in this corner and scratch my nutsack. This is the problem I feel with OW's mechanics, that instead of creating a good balance between skills and a kit, it forces you to depend on your skills, which have a large cooldown. tf2, on the other hand, enables you to use anything whenever. the problem is that you sometimes feel like you have bursts of usefulness, not actual all-around usefulness, which you don't because of cooldowns. And because of this, most matches are about who can ult better, which I can understand the appeal of, but it's not my cup of tea. I think OW also does dome heroes really well, like tracer, genji and lucio. What I mean by this, is that they achieve the balance between having a fun, well rounded kit, with having some bursts of power with their skills, while not having to fully rely on them. Yes, tracer is reliant on her shift, but it has charges and she is fast, meaning you dont have to sit around waiting for something to pop out of cooldown.

The low skill ceiling I'm talking about is also a big problem with overwatch, not the way it uses skills. Take tf2, you want to rocket jump. You need to jump, immediately press crouch, flick the mouse back at a certain speed and aim at a certain angle, shoot the rocket, and flick the mouse back while walking diagonally and looking at a certain angle. For ONE jump. You know how many hours it took me to master this mechanic? I can assure you it's frustrating as fuck when you start out, but when you start getting the hang of it, that's when the difference in skill between you and new players begins to show. That's when you feel that the time you spent learning that paid off, you feel you actually progressed a lot. Now take pharah. press shift, hold space and use your e. You dont have that struggle of learning, you dont feel like you can rocket jump better than anyone else, because everyone with half a brain cell can do it. What im trying to say, is that it's casualised as fuck. You want a game that you dont need those many hours to get good at destroy some scrubs? by all means go overwatch. If you want a long term investment in a game, i'd probably recommend you choose something else. TF2 is dead though, but there are plenty fun games still out there.

And no. They don't. Briefly put the ulti becomes too important. It becomes a game of cards and playing your team's deck of cards instead of a game of skill in micro-decisions. It casualizes the game into ults and CDs instead of true organic play. Even smash bros is less casual than overwatch because it doesn't rely on Ultimates. Think of Smash having Final Smashes every time they 100% their meter. The game would turn into only pushing with ults. That's exactly what overwatch is.

On the other part I'm ok with choosing different characters to counter different characters. That rewards people who know how to use multiple characters, and if the game has good players they will continously keep the game fresh by changing the team. The main problem with Overwatch is the obsession with asymmetrical game modes. Anyone who has played TF2 for a significant amount of time will know that attack/defense and payload maps are the first ones you get bored of. I quit Overwatch but i still want a good hero shooter. As there are only Paladins left (better in some ways worse than others) but i want some more competition than just Overwatch and Paladins. In China there are a Tencent game called Transformers online but i sadly dont think that game is coming west. Here are what i want in a future hero shooter since i still think there are room for more games in the genre (compare the number of hero shooters to survival games or standard FPS games, surely there are room for more games if they are well made)

A lot of Overwatch's maps are rather small, and they seem to have the mindset of creating multiple stages for King of the Hill. Their competitive mode is based on a round system where to compensate for the asymmetrical modes, teams swap between attack and defense. One thing to take from all this though is how increasingly difficult it is to separate rape from NTR.
