Anyways, I have a pirated bundle of AOE games from like 2006. It still works, but the fact it got a semblance of a facelift looks enticing. Is it worth the QOL updates for $30 dollars, despite being on Steam?

ISHYGDDT. Even aside from steam being cancer though, AoM remake is serious fucking cancer on its own. They ruined the netcode and it's unstable as shit now. Play the original, not the remake. Everything the remake guys did to Age of Mythology made it worse and less playable. The expansion is a complete fucking joke to boot. No professional outfit would ever create something as phenomenally half-assed, buggy, and broken as the two-bit con artist studio handling the remake. No joke, they are actual fucking con artists who were straight laughing about how they ruined the game and got money for it and patted themselves on the back for how they cleverly botched the netcode and game stability and produced a broken expansion while making money on it all.

Do NOT buy Age of Mythology remake. I repeat, do NOT buy it. Play the original. The remake is MUCH WORSE when it comes to playing online (or offline for that matter). You won't miss the "expansion" they shat out for the Age of Mythology remake. It is absolute fucking dogshit, the laziest reskin trash, horribly imbalanced, and crash-prone to boot.

DO NOT. I REPEAT. DO NOT BUY THE REMAKE. PLAY THE VASTLY SUPERIOR ORIGINAL INSTEAD.

IIRC as an upgrade/remake it is shitty, but I dunno the exact pros/cons. I think they were advertising better water rendering and steam integration as their perks, which is shit no one gives a fuck about. Oh, now that I think of it, iirc the AoE 2 HD edition did some rebalancing patches that fucked the meta because it was rebalancing performed by scrub hacks.

Generally when it comes to remake trash I'd recommend sticking to the original unless you have the actual original studio doing it, and even then it's questionable. For instance, the Grim Fandango HD remake is imo less pleasant than the original, but at least I get dev commentary I guess. Also my original discs have a corrupted file, so game was unfinishable.
