It's pretty fun, anon. I like the studio that makes it, and loved the first Avernum remake. I'm working through the second one right now, and I'm gonna jump right on the third after that.
You can probably tell this just from the steam page or website but it's very light on the graphics. It takes a good deal of suspension of disbelief to get immersed in the world, but once you can achieve that it's fantastic. The creator has been making games for 20-30 years, and is remarkably but not completely uncorrupted by the SJW stuff surrounding most modern ((("RPG"s))). The world of the game is cool, spooky, fun, and always interesting. The worlds of Spidweb's games are always so full of stuff and mystery. In an age where the open-world meme has violently shat a bloody poopoo soup onto the bulk of vidya, Avernum's open-ish world is actually full of cool stuff and is exciting and mysterious to explore.
Character development isn't anything to write home about, but also isn't bad. There are enough different skills and abilities that minmaxing is a bit tricky, as there's almost always some powerful magical relic that nobody in your party is specced to use. You don't exactly miss out a ton, because you've usually got other equipment that works fine, but finding a mythical polearm or a collection of blessed throwing stars that nobody uses feels odd, and it makes you think out your builds and spread your skills out.
I'm going off on too many tangents. Avernum is fun, anon. Pirate it, and if you like it, buy it from the creator's website instead of steam or GOG. Play the first game before you make that call, either way.
