Though I think it's deceptive, as things like Rocket Knight (the original), Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Contra Hard Corps, etc, all fit the bill too.

The Gauntlet arcade versions were always shameless quarter munchers to be fair. You literally shovel quarters in to refill constantly depleting hit points, and there's never enough food around to counteract this.

3D games where the graphics are so spartan, that the world is just a bunch of platforms floating in the sky. I always really enjoy those, because the level designers had nothing to care about except making it fun.
