I want to like N&B, but it has too many overbearing problems. The vehicle creation is great. Exploring the main hub world is great. The soundtrack is amazing. Nothing else is. Every world is large and vacuously empty (aside from logbox, which is so enclosed, cluttered, and vertical that traversing it with anything is annoying), save for the mission givers and haphazardly placed enemies. And there are only a few mission givers at a time. For some unknown, but probably idiotic, reason, each world is divided into several instances, each with a different set of missions, instead of just sticking all the missions in a single instance. These instances are exactly the same, aside from the placement of NPCs. The only justification for them are the Gruntilda fights, which tend to actually change the world in some way. It feels like intentional padding to make the game seem longer, as there are only six worlds.
Another problem with the worlds is how they ended up affecting mission design. Every mission feels hollow, as they all take place on this world that's been designed as a sandbox, instead of an obstacle course for actual missions. You don't get tightly designed levels for each mission. You just get this cordoned section of a sandbox. There's no excitement in exploring worlds outside of the missions, either, as the only things to find are notes. You can't find extra parts like in the hub world. There's no unique enemies to find. No puzzles to solve. They didn't even bother with the effort of making unique NPCs for each world. They just reuse the same ones over and over again, many of them just taken from the earlier games.
Being on foot is awful, too. It's slow, clunky, and doesn't feel nearly as good as the previous games. You have no reason to go on foot, unless you're outright forced to, either because a vehicle can't go somewhere, or you need to pick something up to put in your vehicle.
And then there's the art design, which is subpar at best, character-ruining at worst. Banjo and Mumbo Jumbo got the worst of it, going from naturally rounded to weirdly angular. The only character design I like is Humba Wumba, and I think that's mostly because the tied shirt makes my dick erect.
You say no one gives a proper criticism of N&B, but I've yet to see a proper defense for its problems. The game gives you a great vehicle building mechanic, then fucks it up by making everything you do with vehicles be terrible. It's not an awful game, but it's not a great one, which makes it not worth Rare teasing a classic collectathon, only to give fans, who had been waiting eight years for the Banjo Threeie that had been promised, something completely different.

It's basically Blackwake+ with an Overwatch aesthetic. I didn't forget. I've never played Rare games beyond a demo for Viva Pinata (which was pretty alright) and Conker's Bad Fur day, which was highly over-rated. Didn't have an NES, SNES, or N64 growing up.
