Taken seriously in what way? As a narrative medium that can tell a great story that will be regarded as a classic in years to come? Sure they can. A good writer can make any medium and story work. As a medium that doesn't require a focus on narrative to be regarded as art? Again, yes, games are more than just a device to tell the story, the gameplay mechanics they are programmed with, the music, art direction, level and enemy design all make them into artistic expressions. Doom is a piece of art no matter the fact it lacks any sort of deep narrative.
On the other hand we should not allow leftists and their apparatchiks be allowed to control the narrative and position themselves as gatekeepers of what is and is not art, otherwise you end up with garbage like the Last of Us, Hellblade Gone Home or David Cage's newest abortion, pretentious hipster trash developed by soulless leftist golems there to push their narrative and numb the brain.
