If they want to improve character customization, they should allow you to create a custom combat style a la carte from established character style move sets. It could be something like different moves cost a certain number of skill points or whatever, but say you wanted Voldo's backwards crawl, sophitia's face-sitting move, and yoshimitsu's suicide move on a single custom character, you should be able to. Some moves would have to be locked to certain types of weapons of course, but there is no reason a custom character should not be fully customizable.

4 was actually the better game and the best in the series as far as I am concerned. It had an okay story line, (nothing special but for a fighting game it was adequate) and the tower survival mode was A LOT of fun. The weapons you could unlock were really awesome, and you could mix and match equipment that did special things in order to switch it up with your friends instead of just having regular straight up matches. I loved playing with swords that did lifesteal so you really never knew who was going to win until the rounds counter ran out. there was just a lot to the game.
5 was a decent game too but there were way less features, characters, no tower, no collectable weapons with unique properties and the single player was worse than abysmal.
Soul series is my favorite fighting game but it hardly ever gets any love. I'm glad namco is sticking with making new games, but i do hope they put a little more effort into it than the last iteration.

Allegedly the game has been in development since 2015, but a ton of the content had to be scrapped or reworked because they tried to implement a style-switching mechanic but it didn't work out. Some characters still retain style-switching, such as the dual blade newcomer. Some of the scrapped styles have been reworked as new characters, so expect a nice roster size (28 to 32 characters according to the leaker).
In terms of mechanics and speed, the game aims to be a middle ground between SCII and SCV. Meter is back, but it's not tied to GI. Instead, it is used only for supers and Soul Charge (which now functions as a V-Trigger of sorts and gives access to EX moves, guard crushes, chip damage, and freezes the timer). The new defensive mechanic, Reversal Edge, parries all three attack levels and then does a counter attack (similar to focus attack). If this attack lands, both characters enter a rock-paper-scissors clash state similar to Injustice. It's risky but the damage is very good and it can potentially ring out. Both RE and GI consume guard crush meter on whiff.
Their research department has concluded that certain characters like Talim and Taki are very popular with people who primarily play for the single player content, and as such they are expected to play a greater role in the story than in previous games. There will be a big cinematic story mode, as well as a mode centered around the player's custom character. CaS-only styles were considered but scrapped due to time constraints, although the leftover animations from the early stages of development might be recycled for this purpose as DLC.
The game will also be on switch, to be announced either later this month along with Dragon Ball Fighter Z or in next month's Nintendo Direct. The guest for this version will be a female Fire Emblem character, although there have allegedly been negotiations to also get Link back in the game for all three versions.

Also I actually like Maxi stance changes in SCV though, there are a few links that don't go anywhere or would be way more useful if certain moves could loop into other stances. I wouldn't say he needs reworked,but a few minor changes would make him much more unpredictable. His SCV version feels more like a regular SC character in that you need to space and play more slowly, instead of how quick and unpredictable maxi usually feels.
I would love to see Yoshimitsu Iron fist possession work like how it did in SCIV again. The timer mechanic was so awesome, good yoshi players were able to simulatneously play a normal game while watching the digits on the timer in order to incorporate some great moves into their game, Furzy is a name that comes to mind but there are others who were very good at it as well.
