The thing I love most about the bosses in SotC was that all the cool stuff was happening in real time. The climbing, the stabbing, the horseback riding, all of it tbh. Like when that bird swoops down and you hop aboard in real time, it didn't happen in a "quicktime event" or a "cutscene". The game didn't momentarily take away control in order to show some cool happening onscreen. No. Instead, it happened while you Still had control over your character, making the gameplay all the more impressive.

Another cool boss battle was the Koloktos fight in Skyward Sword. There, he drops a massive sword that you pick up and systematically cut off his legs, arms, and slash at his heart. There wasn't a "mash A quickly!" button prompt as you did it, and certainly no cutscene either. It happened in real time and was playable all the way through.

Ever since quicktime events and cutscenes got popularized, they began substituting the actual gameplay in order to be more cinematic in their boss fights. Making the cool moments feel more "passive" than interactive, if you get what I mean.

I don't mind it, but I would still prefer it if I actually felt more involved during these moments.

Ironically this was published by Sony one year before Uncharted.

Yeah, and that's not even talking about God of War, which helped massively popularize quicktimes to what they are now.

Many people got introduced to quicktime events by GoW, but my personal first experience with them was the Twilight Thorn battle in Kingdom Hearts II. I use to think it was so cool and epic at the time. But now, not so much anymore. Almost like the overuse of explosions in hollywood blockbusters, the overuse of quicktime events has caused me to feel indifferent about them.

A game has failed any time the player loses control.

Mario RPG and Legend of Dragoon are the earliest games I remember having quicktime bullshit. It was particularly grating as prior to this RPGs were relaxing mental games rather than reaction like every other game. Just one of many steps companies took to throw away their customer base chasing the larger group of people who don't like their product.

2D boss battles can also be interactively epic if done right. For example, my favorite boss from Dawn of Sorrow was the Gergoth monster in that one very tall tower. When the floor breaks midfight, both you and Gergoth fall all the way down to the tower's first floor, but you could still move around and keep slashing away at him in midair.

Super Metroid's Ridley boss fight was another standout. Throughout the game, you learn how walljump and use the screwattack jump correctly. Both are roughly difficult to master if you're playing the game for the first time. Ridley, in this boss fight, spends most of his time in the air. In order to land decent missile shots at him, I was walljumping like crazy in my first playthrough and shooting missiles at him in midair. It was chaotic, fast-paced, and hectic, but fun all the same.
