Well first off chapter based games are usually shit from the start unless it was a feature that was added later into the development of the game.
Second, your explanation reminds me of the trails series. I am a completionist of sorts so when a game will take a minor thing, for example in the Trails series they make it so after you progress to the next area, you can no longer get the books from the previous area. I don't remember exactly what collecting every one of the books gives but I think it is in the vein of "the best weapon for the 2 main protags". Now those weapons obviously aren't needed to complete the game but being a 2D JRPG it has a fuckload of grinding if you don't do everything perfectly (and sometimes even if you do). So having those weapons would be a great help in the long run even if to just cut down on time grinding for the final boss.
Don't get me wrong either. The books weren't hard to find if you talked to every NPC in the game and checked every clickable object but they weren't really easy either (especially since some of them required talking to NPCs at certain times in the game so if you talked to an NPC when you first arrive at the new area and never go back to them again. You may miss out of something important like one of the books.

The biggest shitshow was when they got rid of Kodomo no Jikan on the basis of it being child porn for creepy guys, against the hardliners who argued that not only was it made by a woman based on some of her own experiences, it is a pretty fucked up examination of the usual puppy love tropes. Not Skeletons.
Morrowind does have dialogue with random enemy NPCs if you can charm them, though. One of them is even a Master Trainer for one of the skills. Also, the Ash Vampires all have dialogue, if you do something along those lines.
Battlespire on the other hand lets you communicate with all of the enemies in the game right off the bat. You can even bully a lot of the weaker ones - like one of the Scamps in the first area - into becoming your followers. It's pretty based.

The gist of the story is that you're chasing after a girl you love.
In the final chapter (chapter 1) you finally meet up with the girl and you play through the stage as she removes obstacles in your way.
When you get to the end of the stage you play the stage in rewind and realize that she wasn't moving obstacles out of the way, she was trying to put obstacles in your path that you just barely managed to avoid. The person who kidnapped her was actually someone she ran to for help.
Obviously, it completely changes the tone of the game after that.
Then there's some retarded theories about the girl being an atomic bomb but it's best not to think too artistically. Just play it out and take the story for what it is.

TVtropes, all PC behavior aside, has a terrible community full of idiots by design. They all think they're geniuses for recognizing reoccuring elements in creative works. A trope is just one of many literary devices, and to treat it like the be-all and end-all of analysis is a sign that you're an idiot. And this goes double with a medium like video games, where a trope more often serves a practical purpose than an artistic one - exploding red barrels or bottomless pits are not used to add to the story, they add depth to gameplay without forcing the player to mentally juggle new concepts. 90% old, 10% new is a deliberate game design strategy for a reason.

Hair gets darker and skin gets more pale and mottled with each colossus taint you absorb and by the end of the game you've even started to grow horns. It was super subtle and you don't really start to notice the changes until you're deep enough into the game that you start to wonder whether or not you're doing the right thing by killing off the colossi.

I spent hours on the demo alone just wandering around because of the feeling of lonely adventure the game carried so well. I didn't think you could so effectively convey an emotion like loneliness while playing a game and make if genuinely fun on top of that.

Elves were useless in MMZ1. You want one that increases your max life? Hope you like raising it by like 5 levels, which requires an obscene amount of E-Crystals. I don't think I've played through the game and raised one to max level.
At least MMZ3 let you equip satellite elves if they were grown and on the correct mode, so you could wear up to two of them for effects, which didn't harm your score.
If you were playing on hard, you could only charge your shield boomerang (or use knuckle on 4) for elemental attacks.
