I can only talk about the first one (childhood game of mine) and the 2003 one (I think it was either the second or the third one, had a fun card game there). Oh and also the card game there was for it as well.
It's a very fun series of games about actually giving a fuck about the abomination that shits turds every half a second and demands food the other half.
You usually have only 1 mon (some games let you have 3) and you end up caring more about him because of this, instead of dropping him in a box when it's no longer needed.
Digimons die so you never build an attachment to their stats, only to the mon itself which I don't think many people realize is what actually makes the game far less autistic than the "effort points" autism that Pokemon ends up becoming.
They also try a fuckload of different gameplay aproaches with every game so you almost always get something different. Lack of consistency here is a bonus since it means variety. Even their card game is pretty fun, especially the last boss fight that requires you to truly understand the game but also follow the story closely near the end.
The anime is also pretty great. See, the Pokemon anime is about some dumb faggot going on a quest for animal violence and meeting a lot of girls he never gets to bone because faggot.
Digimon however is about a bunch of kids placed in stressfull situations and having to not only deal with their own shortcomings but also grow up. The common theme in almost every digimon show is "maturity", with the mons themselves mirroring this when they digivolve and become not just stronger but gainining a more mature look as well.
I don't mean more belts, black wings, edgy blades and missiles, I mean that the Rookie pokemons look and sound like kids, more interested in food and friends while Champions are more focused and designed around protecting their friends and their world, etc.
Both the games and the show are pretty good, you should play and watch them.

Has Digimon been completely explored? What sort of stories they can tell with the premise that the franchise has? There is also the ability to simply explore events in the digital world without humans. The X evolution movie was very interesting as it dealt with their equivalent of racism.
That said, the best way to go is indeed going with more mature themes and storylines. Tri worked as it starts with the happy fun kids doing things and got Lovecraft as shit went down, people were killed, and things never seemed to get better.
I personally would like to see a storyline that STARTS with Yggdrasil having maybe killed the previous chosen with his knights. This gives rise to another set of chosen who end up eventually putting the clues together that the previous team is dead and that the counterpoint to the royal knights is the 7 sins. So it'd START with some of the usual powerlevel stuff but get thrown out when they have to go to the dark sea. They then gotta get the 7 sins, one by one, to join their cause of re-establishing a balance since Alphamon seems to not be joining the fight for some reason.
This helps as the 7 sins have a joggressed form in Ogudomon.

It's largely unexplored in comparison to many of the other aspects of Digimon. It's painfully obvious that digimon and eve nthe god are always in a morally grey area. The angels aren't always good, the demons aren't always bad, and Yggdrasil isn't strictly an asshole, he just comes off as one.
The darker storyline allows for more exploration into their concepts with the sins:

All the other ideas are bullshit. Adventure wasn't good because of the concept of going into the internet, that was just a backdrop for all sorts of crazy monsters fighting each other with insane lore. A bunch of very well fleshed out characters are built up in a very well structured story, which seems like a typical monster of the week thing at first, but before you know it they've been the embodiments of emotions all along, which actually was there since the earliest episodes if you pay attention, and then they're fighting Dracula and his legion of monsters with their own monsters.
I'm a major lorefaggot who has written walls of text on here about the lore before, but really, that isn't what made the individual stories good. The Royal Knights weren't even a thing until Frontier, and even there they were minor and not what they're known as today. Most people would say Adventure or Tamers are the best parts of the series, or World on the games side, and the Royal Knights and Yggdrasil aren't in those at all, unless you have obscure but important japanese only games for a handheld nobody has heard of.
Just have well developed characters fighting with cool monsters. How could you ever run out of concepts for that?

It's weak as fuck. Dungeons and stages are absolutely terrible with no interesting design to them or complexity, the level balance is balls to the wall terrible with no sense of proper progression. Normal enemies are extremely weak, even on Hard, while some of the bosses just wall you. None of the selections you make during the game matter. The soundtrack is forgettable at best. Characters are grinding stereotypes. Cools and interesting concepts are just dropped for Digimon's own stereotypes and plot device re-uses.
The script translation is wonky at best. For example, when characters are speaking about an unknown monster, bakemono, it's translated as Bakemon. This happens multiple times during the game, and at no point there is a Bakemon present.
No wonder Pokémon is more popular when Digimon's best is this pathetic.

Digimon World 1 and 2 are terrible. They were so back in the day, and so they are now. Doesn't help all the English NTSC copies of DW1 are barely worked due to disc pressing issues and the PAL version can't even be finished. DW1's terrible semi-automatic battles combined with less than intuitive monster raising sim and RPG elements were a good start, but the game's terrible. 3's okay, it's got a better scaling that most Digimon games, but it's essentially broken once you access higher evolution stages, throwing the game's balance out of the window again.
I hope Next Order has fixed all the tedious and boring shit that slowed DW1 down and has made the obtuse raising a clearer and intuitive system.

What's this meme all about? I think I actually played the PAL version for the PSX back when I was a kid and I did managed to finish the game. (Finishing Digimon World 1 when you're only 12 should award you with several PhDs, especially when you know nothing about japanese culture and english ain't your first language)

You what now? That's one of the best parts of the game! You're the partner of a Digimon, not the Digimon itself, if was amazing that you could only give general commands to your mon and he'd do shit based on how you raised him, brains being particularly important here.
And once you got to 500 Brains, you could pratically tell him exactly what to do but the raising part was always still king. You could tell him to spam the same move as much as you wanted, he's not gonna do that if he's not fast enough or if he's too tired.
It made the whole experience far better for the sake of being a "mon raising game" instead of a "final fantasy clone with mons as party menbers".

I had a lot of trouble when I was a kid playing that game as well and only a few years later I noticed exactly what the issue was.
The usual outcome for a Rookie Digimon, even after having beastly stats trained, was to become a Nunemom.
This was because one of the most important aspects to raising them was the amount of battles he did, which you'll likely avoid as much as possible since they can be costly and risky, especially when you have a Gym that close to the city. It's even worse when you compare the stats you gain from a fight with what you get from training, until you realise a battle only takes 20 min, so if you multiply the stats from a fight by 3, it actually is a really good general training and the credits help as well.
There's also another detail where the Champion you get is dictated by the difference in your stats. Once the 3 days are up, it checks your stats and if one is 100 points above all other, it dictates what mon you get. If neither is too different, that's a Nunemon for you. However, I never managed to confirm this.
Point is, raising Digimon wasn't that hard, you just had to actually fight as much as possible instead of sticking to the gym all the time and use it specifically to specialize your Rookie into a stat in particular only.
Honestly, I don't know how younger me even managed to get a Phonenixmon in that game, especially when so many people swear it's not even there.

But seriously, it was one of the unique aspects of the game that I liked the most. The game wasn't about being strong, it was about raising someone to be strong. No direct control, just giving it hints on what to do and have the result down to your preparation made for a pretty great experience with your mon being it's own thing and you it's partner.
By comparison, I never enjoyed much Pokemon games since they act like party menbers in old Final Fantasy games (talking about 1-3 for the GameBoy), except there's no personality to them at all and only one is present at all times.

The game is an RPG in it's truest sense. Battles are not decided based mostly on player's input, his quick reflexes or quick thinking.
Rather, battles are decided based on how you've raised your character (your partner in this game) with extensive and well fleshed out mechanics for that, as well as the equipment you manage to bring to a fight.
If you raise a good mon, every fight will be easy to win with boss fights being tense but enjoyable. If you raise a shitmon, no amount of Disks or Disquettes will save him from losing serious battles or draining your resources while fighting with him.
The very concept of learning techniches and gaining stats from fights incentivizes going out and explore the world, especially since the easiest way to train specific stats is to use specific gyms, not to mention making it easier to raise happiness and discipline by winning fights and traveling in the right biome.
These last points incentivize exploring the world all the time to train your mon, especially since you'll need to do it everytime a new one is reborn, but you never have the easy get away of using an higher power mon to get you safely traveling around.

Amusingly enough, it seems the "care mistakes" and "battles fought" bit has an extra nuance to it. Some digimons have these conditions reversed, some requiring a minimum amount of care mistakes and some requiring that no more than X battles are fought.
Seadramon and Megaseadramon in particular seem the pacifist kind, as well as H-Kabuterimon.
