I think everyone's at least tried to improve working conditions since then. I worked in Dev Support QA. Did some console shit and some mobage. Teams were cool, management were pretty hands-off, hours were better than at smaller companies I worked at, job security was a lot better. Most issues stemmed from usual dev-side complications (not enough time to make game, game needs to have X by exactly tomorrow and builds take 45 mins etc) or from the fact that most QA are contractors and so are explicitly not supposed to get certain things (but my team handed me a plaque for one of the mobile projects and I managed to get a dev team hoodie)

Honestly I probably just lucked out with the teams I was on. Embedded Dev Support QA (where I worked) was treated as part of the team socially, but not legally. We ran fairly autonomously, and talked a lot to external QA. I also managed to swing local admin and I spent my lunch breaks playing non-work vidya. I also watched a lot of youtube videos. That system will probably be maintained until the team breaks up or someone abuses it really hard. We had normal OT, and no nightshift on the embedded team, and while we didn't get transportation paid for, our manager made sure we got free food if we stayed too late and the cafeteria was pretty good (and that's assuming we didnt just order food with the dev team).

Yeah that's true. External QA definitely has a few more degrees of separation. A lot of the teams I've worked with just have rolling testers as well. They're "open" before we are and close long after we've gone home.
