 No.992486>>992529 [Watch Thread][Show All Posts]

Hello /tech/ recently I have tried to login to an old email that I had years ago, the email service and the account itself are both still active.

My trouble comes when I tried to reset the password by filling out a password reset form (keep in my this email is likely 10 years old or older) so I cant recall all of the details needed to verify that it is in fact my email.

So I come to you today to seek answers and suggestion for the appropriate course of action

>inb4 nypa, not gonna help you nigger

This is my own email and I have no intent whatsoever to gain access to anything which is not mine.

Can you provide evidence that it was yours? Then maybe try writing the provider and ask them to change the password.

Otherwise hacking is the only way, but bruteforce over the net is tough (I mean they block it after a few attempts0.

the only thing i can remember using it for was for a runescape account and a few other sites, this thing is so ancient that the only option i have outside of sending screenshots of evidence to microsoft and hacking it is to use an even older email to get a reset sent to

also i have no experience with hacking whatsoever

after a quick overlook of my options it seems that it is now narrowed down to either hacking or contacting mircoshaft

wat do?

 No.992514>>992516

Did you reuse the password on that account with any other services?

i could try a few old ones but i havent had luck with any of them or any guesses so far

Try the peaceful route first. Explain your situation and attach whatever proof you have.

Why do you need this 10 year old account anyway?

primarily to protect my data and regain access to other accounts i used it to sign up with, that and i got a notification that my email had been leaked in some breach and so id like to see what all is on there if anything

also because curiosity since its old as dirt

Is there a chat box on microshaft where i could talk to someone who can help me?

Possibly check have I been pwned. Last time I used it they will tell you what big leaks your email has been in.

If this is an email service you pay for, contact customer service, and they will help you. If it's one you don't pay for (if it's hotmail/MS live as it seems to be), their even taking the time to read your inquiry about it has a cost/benefit ratio >1, and your inquiry will likely to be sent directly to /dev/null or whatever the equivalent is on Windows Server.

This is one of the drawbacks of "free" services.

It's 2018, and even Microsoft won't have left an internet-facing service vulnerable to whatever kind of cracking you're capable of, so you can forget that, too. Or you can not forget it and go to Federal prison.

i believe that is where i found out about the breach

>>992529

would bugging the hell outta them work? like just keep calling them until they help you sort shit out so that it would make the ratio worth it for you to stop calling them?

also

>Or you can not forget it and go to Federal prison.

not that i would try cracking it but why would someone go to jail for forcefully regaining access to an account with their personal information on it?

 No.992534>>992550

Well did you track down the leak?

>not that i would try cracking it but why would someone go to jail for forcefully regaining access to an account with their personal information on it?

weev went to prison for accessing a series of publicly-available URLs. The CFAA is very broad. His conviction was reversed on a jurisdictional technicality, but if you try to access an account you do not own (even if you theoretically own the emails on it) on a server you do not own in any kind of fashion that could be construed as an abuse of network or computer resources, you can be sure that whichever Federal prosecutor handles your case will be much more careful than weev's was.

did i find which site my info leaked from?

>>992546

so basically tldr dont try shit unless it is legitimate l33t h4x0rm4n style shit?

theoretically speaking, what would be a general idea or list of things one would need to have some level of understanding in order to recover a theoretical email?
