Interesting timing, eh? Right after the (((CoC))) in the Linux kernel.

>We know Microsoft’s decision to join OIN may be viewed as surprising to some; it is no secret that there has been friction in the past between Microsoft and the open source community over the issue of patents. For others who have followed our evolution, we hope this announcement will be viewed as the next logical step for a company that is listening to customers and developers and is firmly committed to Linux and other open source programs.

I'll give them a few months/years and next there will be a Linux kernel inside windows :^)

 No.985284>>985298

I called it man. There's going to be an official Microsoft Linux in the near future.

It'll be the defacto bootleg version of Windows to replace 7 boasting about its ability to run Windows programs using proprietary comparability layers. Of course it won't work as well as...

Windows 10 which will be a subscription service.

All botnet of course.

It already exists nigga.

It's called microsoft azure.

what do you mean? wsl is already a thing

A PR move. If they cared about freedom, then they would release the patents to public domain. If the OIN cared about freedom, then they would fight the software patent system itself. Microsoft, Google, and IBM by themselves are powerful enough to make a dent in the current system. But they don't.

I don't know what in the fuck Azure runs, only that it runs like shit, is expensive, and unreliable. But it's not available to desktop users, so it's not quite the same as Windows 7/10.

>only that it runs like shit, is expensive, and unreliable

Just like windows.

Honestly, it's their first draft attempt at merging windows with linux, it runs a combination of the two and it's obviously their way of testing the waters.

They're attempting to co-opt it to prevent Valve from moving Steam over to another OS. I'm betting the next Microsoft console will run some abomination of Windows combined with Linux

Hear me out guys....maybe Microsoft....still with me? Okay good...maybe Microsoft, doesn't have autism and doesn't see Linux as a competitor to their business? Linux isn't represented by a single company. Nobody owns it. Microsoft isn't trying to control Linux, they're using it as a tool like everyone else is. Linux to the corporate world is a platform where the big guys can test software concepts before deploying it on their own in-house platforms

 No.985332>>985516

Why would they make another consumer OS?

 No.985516

Can't have any normie-usable OS that's not under corporate control. You don't just let the cattle roam free into the wilderness.

 No.985553>>985569

It is a direct competitor though. If you're doing your shit on another OS, you're not doing it on Windows, ergo competition. Given a sufficiently capable alternative, you wouldn't use Windows and Linux is in the best position for that. Microsoft is just wondering if they can improve their profit-margin and hedge their bets by getting a foothold in Linux. They're probably also contemplating selling MS Linux to the corporate idiots who decided they need Linux but have no actual standards and are just shopping for vendors.

>It is a direct competitor though.

It isn't outside the server world.

The massive personal computer market, which includes most of the business market, is 90%+ windows and less than 5% linux, and the market split hasn't changed significantly in the last decade.

>Given a sufficiently capable alternative, you wouldn't use Windows and Linux is in the best position for that.

By a very generous idea of "best position", sure.

What's the point of using a FOSS operating system when you're just going to run proprietary software on it?

>What's the point of using a FOSS operating system when you're just going to run proprietary software on it?

Not much, either the people who do this are virtue signalers with double standards or they don't understand the simple problem that black boxes/proprietary software brings.

But some people know the difference and they choose the stance of choosing the lesser evil because they cannot immediately change X non-libre software (photoshop for example) for these people who do such actions they need to understand that they have to finance the alternative free/libre software that they should migrate on.
