HDD making crackling noise even when its not working. Like if some heavy operation on files being made. What to do? Iotop and system monitor don't detect shit. I read it might be because disk is becoming faulty. Its around 6-7 years old.

Will deleting loads of files and then fragmenting help? Or its time to clone system and buy new hdd?

Windows loves doing things behind your back. It may do benchmarks for telemetry upload, it may defragment the disks in the background, it may index all your porn for easier search, it may optimize .NET (whatever that entails) and so on. If you use Windows 10, my condolences, may you rest in peace, amen.

>Or its time to clone system

It's always time for that. One thing I learned is that backups don't age well. You make new backups regularly and delete the old ones which became useless due to age.

>and buy new hdd?

If you're not a poorfag get yourself an external drive for storing the backups. Windows chewing on the internal disk when you're away is not a sign that the disk is failing, just that Microsoft are assholes and don't treat users with respect.
