What are your experiences with Snap/Flatpak & AppImage?

I have a feeling that Snap is sure to go the same road as Ubuntu's failed UI, but that's just me.

AppImage can co-exist with either Snap or Flatpak. It better serves a different niche: Testing.

 No.944063>>944065

Appimages are fucking awesome for fast moving projects.

I use:

Krita

Libreoffice

Freetube

And a few others.

Flatpak is a pain in the ass, so I stopped using that shit.

I would appreciate it if anyone were to post a fast, easy way to streamline an appimage creation.

If that were posted, I would compile a forked version of furfaggape with the faggotry stripped out.

Personally, I'd rather see Appmimages uses primarily for testing and Flatpak for general distribution.

The problem with AppImage is that it's not sandboxed and you can run into the same problem with old libs as the Steam Runtime.

I'm not a developer, this is only an user perspective.

>Snap

Installed it once, it showed me a warning with something like "you might need an Ubuntu account for some tasks such as installing as user", uninstalled.

>Flatpak

Werks on Debian.

Werks on Arch but you have to change the permissions on /var/lib/flatpak.

Doesn't werk in Gentoo without systemd, but that's only because the ebuild they point you to doesn't support it.

>AppImage

I have only ever used 2 AppImages.

Otter Browser: doesn't work, says I'm missing some libs (fucking lol).

LibreOffice: werks.

I'm currently using Flatpak on Gentoo without systemd.

Then either you made your own ebuild or the same ebuild has been updated to support non-systemd.

 No.944201

I've had a decent experience with using AppImage on Funtoo, Gentoo, and ArchLinux. It's usually fine and works. I have never used those other ones though.

 No.944219

I've packaged software with AppImage, which is fine, but I prefer to create a shell installer, which installs in $HOME/Apps or a user chosen directory.

It's dead simple:

1. Modify install script.

2. Archive files

3. cat install.sh archive.tar.bz2 > installer.run

As with AppImages some patching of RPATH to $ORIGIN/somepath is necessary for it to use the bundled libraries.

I haven't even considered Snap or Flatpak because that would require the user to have that installed on their system.
