GNU is a modular operating system that can use many kernels. Even HURD can implement different kernels.
Besides Linux, GNU runs on top of Linux-Libre (which is an FSF project), kFreeBSD, NT and the Solaris kernel.
Linux needs GCC to compile and owes it's popularity to GNU. The FSF was busy making HURD, but without it the original plan was to use kFreeBSD until Linux came around; would you retards say "it's not GNU, it's kFreeBSD" had they chosen that kernel instead of Linux?
