Is emacs harder to learn than vim?

 No.932034>>932092

>>932030 (OP)

Yes, in the same way that it's harder to learn how to fly a Boeing 777 than a Piper Cub.

But you can go a lot farther in the 777. Same with Emacs.

 No.932090

Yeah, probably. Vim seems like what you would come up with if you just decided to make a text editor one day and kept sticking stuff on as you went along. Emacs seems like it was made with a bit more thought behind it. I use vim though lul

I use vim, watched a few vids on "what you can do with emacs but you can't do with vim", but I could do everything with vim just slightly different and using the command line piped in from the same terminal. I keep reading emac's better, but I've yet to see how. Doesn't it break the "do one thing and do it well" ethos? vim is an editor and it does it well, emacs is a ui for your os and includes editor, email client, etc. Maybe it's something you got to try for yourself.

It's like comparing orange to apples.

Dumbest thread you could possibly make.

A text editor doesn't function as IRC client or allow you to browse the web.

>scrollbar taking up valuable space

>2 lines taken up for hints

>redundant statusbar line with application name and version

>can't remove all that shit via config I'm guessing

That's a lot of wasted space, no thanks

>>932119

yeah, I said it here

>>932092

Let's put it another way, why is there a reasonable amount of people trying to make the case to use the emac's text editor over the vim text editor? What advantage does it give you?

 No.932133

>>932092

Many people use Emacs with Vim keybindings, nobody uses Vim with Emacs keybindings. That should tell you something about Emacs's core.

 No.932134

Actually I just use emacs because of org mode, then i gave up on vim, since I don't need it anymore.

The HJKL binding is still useful in less and ranger, but that's the only thing I remember from my vim days

 No.932135>>932151

>>932030 (OP)

No, GNU Emacs has better docs and tutorial. GNU Emacs' keybindings are easier to remember since they are based on mnemonics. But both editors are just as efficient and good; it's just matter of your personal preference.

also, why another vim vs. emacs thread?

 No.932136

There is already a fucking thread treating this question.

What the fuck are doing the mods.

I'm not even talking about OP who can't fucking use a search engine.

Can one claim that he truly learned Emacs..?
