Besides Stallman, who inspires you the most of the major developers out there?
I personally like Brendan Eich. He stole the idea of Mosaic from the University of Illinois and created Mozilla as the "Mo[saic K]illa" that would eventually evolve into Netscape. If I recall correctly, mozilla.org was originally registered under his name and he did much of the basic groundwork programming. Mozilla was one of the first companies to release their source code as Open Source that attracted mass media attention. He would later develop JavaScript in a matter of two weeks in order to apply LISP/Scheme programming concepts to the burgeoning Java environment. The development of JS, a major backbone of modern internet applications, in such a short period of time is probably what he is best known for.
Recently, he was fired as the CEO of Mozilla because he donated $1000 to a political compaign that opposed gay marriage in California. He didn't use Mozilla funds but donated completely separately as a private citizen, but opponents at Mozilla used it against him for political reasons and pushed him out of the company. Cast out from the company that he created from the ground up, he created Brave Software. They have recently created the Brave browser which pretty much aims to undo all the harm that Javascript has created on the internet over the years. In a sense, Eich is making up for the horrors that his own creation wreaked on the internet.
How about you? Who inspires you?

is the phrase you're looking for. He donated to support a social institution that has survived in recognizable form for millennia in many if not most human cultures. Supporting the norm is a better way to frame it than opposing the bizarre innovation called "gay marriage" that's been around for a couple decades.

That word has a different meaning based on context. You can resign willingly, or be forced out. In general, CEOs and other principals don't get fired like plebs do. If the board of directors wants them gone, they ask them to resign. You have to differentiate between that situation and one where the guy out of the blue one day decided he had enough and quit entirely based on his own volition.

To be fair, and I say this from the position of accepting homosexuality's abnormalcy and openness to the possibility of deleterious effects of it on family and society, I don't really see "supporting traditional marriage" to exist outside the context of heterosexuality. Would such groups advocate marriage and traditional social roles regardless of sexuality, as in, research and educate about effects of marriage in society in contrast/with respect to unionlessness, childlessness, career choices, availability of divorce? Maybe; but I still see the term as rather an euphemism.

>In 1995, Netscape Communications recruited Brendan Eich with the goal of embedding the Scheme programming language into its Netscape Navigator.[10] Before he could get started, Netscape Communications collaborated with Sun Microsystems to include in Netscape Navigator Sun's more static programming language Java, in order to compete with Microsoft for user adoption of Web technologies and platforms.[11] Netscape Communications then decided that the scripting language they wanted to create would complement Java and should have a similar syntax, which excluded adopting other languages such as Perl, Python, TCL, or Scheme. To defend the idea of JavaScript against competing proposals, the company needed a prototype. Eich wrote one in 10 days, in May 1995.
>Although it was developed under the name Mocha, the language was officially called LiveScript when it first shipped in beta releases of Netscape Navigator 2.0 in September 1995, but it was renamed JavaScript[2] when it was deployed in the Netscape Navigator 2.0 beta 3 in December.[12] The final choice of name caused confusion, giving the impression that the language was a spin-off of the Java programming language, and the choice has been characterized[13] as a marketing ploy by Netscape to give JavaScript the cachet of what was then the hot new Web programming language.

ANDY!!! OwO
He inspired my love of microkernels!
Theres a lot of good stuff locked behind (((academic paywalls))), but heres some stuff from the Minix3 website:
>Reduce kernel size
>Monolithic operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux, BSD) have millions of lines of kernel code. There is no way so much code can ever be made correct. In contrast, MINIX 3 has about 4000 lines of executable kernel code. We believe this code can eventually be made fairly close to bug free.
>Cage the bugs
>In monolithic operating systems, device drivers reside in the kernel. This means that when a new peripheral is installed, unknown, untrusted code is inserted in the kernel. A single bad line of code in a driver can bring down the system. This design is fundamentally flawed. In MINIX 3, each device driver is a separate user-mode process. Drivers cannot execute privileged instructions, change the page tables, perform I/O, or write to absolute memory. They have to make kernel calls for these services and the kernel checks each call for authority.
>Limit drivers' memory access
>In monolithic operating systems, a driver can write to any word of memory and thus accidentally trash user programs. In MINIX 3, when a user expects data from, for example, the file system, it builds a descriptor telling who has access and at what addresses. It then passes an index to this descriptor to the file system, which may pass it to a driver. The file system or driver then asks the kernel to write via the descriptor, making it impossible for them to write to addresses outside the buffer.

He didn't use Mozilla funds but donated completely separately as a private citizen, but opponents at Mozilla used it against him for political reasons and pushed him out of the company.
This didn't happen. Mozilla refused to fire him and the people went crazy. Several websites called for a Mozilla boycott and some of them even refused to serve their website if they detected a Firefox User Agent, encouraging users to install Google Chrome instead.
Seeing this Eich decided to step down from the CEO position. Mozilla offered him a new position in the company, but Eich refused it and instead went on to found Brave.
Mozilla then released a lenghty post in their official blog stating that:
>the employees that wanted to fire Eich never worked with him personally
>only ten or so employees wanted him fired, but the media misrepresented them and made everyone think it was the majority who wanted him out
>people at Mozilla knew about his donation, yet he was promoted to CEO
>Mozilla doesn't care whether or not you support gay marriage or any other cause besides an open Internet
>Mozilla didn't want Eich out of the company considering his big role as a founder
If you did your homework, you'd know that the employees who wanted to fire Eich worked in Human Resources and Marketing, respectively; and none of them work for Mozilla anymore.

But this didn't happen. Eich resigned because he didn't want to hurt Mozilla's image and because he didn't want to be a part of that shitshow. The people at Mozilla wanted him to stay.
>Four years later, Mozilla is cucked beyond belief
What the fuck is this supposed to mean? Corporations and foundations can't have a romantic/sexual partner who cheats on them. They're not people.
>and haven't made good innovations in years
You mean besides replacing their JS engine, their CSS engine, Gecko, and basically rewriting the entire browser while still adhering to WWW standards and adding privacy features such as canvas protections and Facebook containers?
>I can't wait for Brave to replace Firefox as the dominating FOSS browser
Brave won't replace Firefox because there is nothing Brave can do that Firefox can't. Also their payment system is shady at best and doesn't deliver what was initially promised.
Plus, Blink is fucking cancer and has never been truly audited, despite what the liars at Ungoogled Chromium, Bromite and similar projects want to make people believe.

Why do people keep saying this? You have to be invited to RiseUp as part of an organized left wing organization. It has strong ties to Antifa and all sorts of anarchist organizations. It's not exactly "Antifa email" but it also has the explicit purpose of promoting evasion of law enforcement by left wing political activists. It's a closed system that is doomed to fail because of its exclusivity. Firefox should have taken the $100,000 they gave to RiseUp and given it to an alternative project like Tor or I2P. >>"RiseUp isn't Antifa hurrr durrr"
>Why do people keep saying this? You have to be invited to RiseUp as part of an organized left wing organization
You have to be invited after the FBI raided their servers. It was open until very recently, and the invitation has to come from any RiseUp user. Which could be a Debian developer, a 4chan shitposter or any of the journalists who use it as a safe alternative to Gmail.
It has strong ties to Antifa and all sorts >It's not exactly "Antifa email" but it also has the explicit purpose of promoting evasion of law enforcement by left wing political activists
Political activists* they can't and don't check your emails so this point is totally moot.
>It's a closed system that is doomed to fail because of its exclusivity
It's been around for 20 years and its doing fine.
>Firefox should have taken the $100,000 they gave to RiseUp and given it to an alternative project like Tor or I2P
They gave half a million to Tor. They actively reject patches that fuck up with Tor. They give money to several open source projects.
>Privacy doesn't belong to the left, it belongs to everyone.
Exactly why Mozilla gives money to everyone.
