It's basically a vacuum tube, but it's printed on a wafer like a normal silicon transistor. As such it is very small (nanometer range) and shows a massive advantage.

>Our very first effort to fashion a prototype produced a device that could operate at 460 gigahertz---roughly 10 times as fast as the best silicon transistor can manage.

Does the article say give a glimpse to theoretical power consumption?

I think its neat that there are so many ways of transmitting and storing data that the average person would not even dream of.

Read it and find out

It doesn't say anything about the current draw. But the voltages they tested were around 10V but other tests have shown voltages from 1V to 2V.

So if this pans out, how much of an impact will it make? I can't imagine it'd be as big as the original transistor, but it'd be nice if it was.

Well. Looks like EMP proofing might be a thing now.

I wonder if this could be extremely cost prohibitive, kinda like GaAs conductors.

It probably means petaflops capable IC's in smartphones. You can take it from there.

>>907153

It uses current metal-oxide semiconductor fabrication methods, so the only costs involved would be designing the masks and producing the actual chips. Nothing else needed for investment.

You missed possibly bridging the Terahertz Gap so we can use that spectrum for telecommunications, so (again possibly) near-light communications.

Even if it should be expensive to produce, we could make some to put in an IC-like package for existing circuit formats for transmitting

Which would be fucking great
