I eventually plan to release my imageboard reader when it's a little more mature. If you are curious in how it works you pretty much just do is open the display and then get the window via the WINDOWID environmental variable. Then you find the subwindow which contains the main text region and create a graphics context for it. When you want to render the image you create a pixmap for it, and then iterate over your image and raw each pixel to it. After that you copy that pixmap onto the window you found earlier.

There's also some extra stuff you need to do to try and detect when you should redraw the images in case they mess with the window.

"Flat design" wasn't popularized without a purpose. I'ts geared towards rapefugees from apefreaka who are utterly confused by crowded interfaces with lots of complicated shapes and many colors. Or if you want to push the envelope try "textpunk"

>Newspaper articles, BBSs (like this one), IRC, ASCII art, Kopipe, program source code, Novels, View HTML source, Google search engine, Mathematics, Hieroglyphics, The Rosetta Stone, Gutenberg Bible...

>A textpunk doesn't sit there waiting for information to be slowly fed to him drip at a time by the gogglebox. A textpunk is thirsty for knowledge and 100% focused - they read old school hacker textfile zines. They don't waste their time with lame imageboarders: instead they're doing crazy abstract shitposting on /prog/ with thoughts and concepts twisted up so with many levels of irony that it becomes an art form.

>Textpunks recognize and understand the true power of kopipe - how a well crafted piece of text can be so damn powerful that it alone can trigger thousands of replies with so much veracity within days. They see through things down into the core of what really counts, everything in the computer is built of text, ascii, strings of bits - They don't care about the latest 3D GUI environment fads. No, that's just a distraction. 7-bit clean ascii program source code. That's textpunk.

>Look at how text has shaped humanity: The birth of writing systems was correlated with some of fastest advances of science and technology in early human history. Mass production of the Bible took power away from a few select monks and democratized paving the way for people to start thinking for themselves. Programming is text and it's the closest thing there is in the world to true wizardy and spell casting. Talking about real SICP-type programming here, not that modern garbage.

>Today textpunks build up digital libraries of books and stick it to the copyright cartel. Schwarz, lib gen, the gentoomen library, and so many anonymous sources that tireless scan and collect books.. Textpunks are the people in tune with modern digital society of ultrafast cost-free transmission of text, they're the ones rethinking and revolutionizing publishing mixing it with open rights and making works available online.

Not him but Obj-C is literally just regular C with 12 new keywords and a new syntax feature. If you know C, you already know most of Obj-C.

A lot of C-first programs use it in parts in order to avoid C++bloat. Find a C program on github and assuming that it's not a videogame, there's a good chance that the language details will have some Objective-C.

Most pajeets just use C2 though because it's easier but Obj-C is a much simpler design.

Here is the full code:

#!/bin/bash
DIR=$(dirname $0)

# get terminals opened by user
TERMINALS=($(ls -l /dev/pts/* | grep $USER | awk '{print $10}'))

if [[ -e "$DIR"/themes/"$1".sh ]]; then

printf "\033]4;$j;${colors[j]}\007" > ${TERMINALS[$i]}
done
done
else
echo "No theme named "$1" available!"

Brainlet detected. Unlike UTF-16, UTF-8 works with the standard library functions instead of nothing special variants.

There's two main things you have to worry about. Using a random index into the string and getting the string length. With UTF-8 it's easy to handle this by knowing what a byte starts in binary:

0: Single byte character aka ASCII

11: First byte of a multibyte character

10: Every other byte in a multibyte character

From a design standpoint, there is nothing good about grey unless you are going for some sober hicontrast theme. Grey only goes with grey, so you better forget about colours ever looking good. That said, you can circumvent this by shifting your greys very slightly towards some colour, in which case you can build a fitting palette.

Well, a few of these are still around in some form or another, so let's go down the list.

>SGI IRIX

A bunch of the 4DWM source and some apps got released and some lone (German?) developer named Eric is forking it into a Linux desktop called MaXX Interactive. Development seems to be halted, which is disappointing. He hasn't uploaded any source code changes since like 2009 I don't think, but here's a link to what is there:

http://dev.maxxinteractive.com/trax/maxxdesktop/browser

>NeXTSTEP

This is obviously available as GNUStep. Most of the novelty is tied up in the UI and apps, so it's not like you really need the Mach kernel underneath to get the full user experience. Just run GNUStep on any Unix-like OS and you've got something far better.

>OS/2 Warp

There's actually a company that got permission from IBM to reverse engineer the kernel, desktop shell, and other parts of the OS to apply modern features and security patches and redistribute it, mostly for embedded machines like ATMs or CNC machines that still run OS/2. You can buy the personal edition for $129 and it runs well on Core2 laptops.

https://www.arcanoae.com/

>BeOS

There's an operating system called Haiku OS that looks and feels exactly like it with excellent driver support and a growing number of packages on the AMD64 port. The i386 port has some binary compatibility with BeOS legacy apps. There are also PPC and ARM ports in progress.

Here's CDE, the Common Desktop Environment. For a while it was basically the official UNIX workstation desktop. A few years ago the source was released under the LGPL and you can now install it on nearly any OS, or compile it yourself if there aren't already binaries. It works well under Debian, OpenBSD, and OpenIndiana and the installation guides are fairly straightforward. Installing it on Debian is as easy as adding the Sparky Linux repos and installing the "cde-desktop" package. It's fully automated and everything works except dtlogin (the CDE login manager), which you'll have to setup manually by editing some files and rebooting.

It works pretty well but it's ugly as shit and painful to use, and has some gaping security holes still since development has been abandoned for like a decade or more. Still, it's nice for some of my older shitboxes when I want to play retro hackerman/90s UNIX sysadmin.

>that panel

>those minimized icons

It's pretty cancerous and needs to be reworked into something that isn't the big ball of shit that it is now. Don't even get me started on the archaic source code. It needs to be modernized with a better (smaller) panel, applets for battery and network managers, and just general support for new stuff. The entire desktop is stuck in the 90s. I personally want CDE to stick around as more than a historical reference. I actually want to use it day to day. Wouldn't it be nice to have a fork of wicd with a properly themed UI and icons? How about a proper battery icon and tooltip? How about an expanded settings panel with the ability to export your custom theme to the desktop as a file with one click so you can use it elsewhere? Hell, how about a terminal that properly displays colors and fonts, and how about a file picker with image thumbnail previews?

>No it isn't faggot.

It is, but that's my opinion. It's not ugly in a bad way though. It's ugly like a deformed puppy. I wish it was better but I still have a soft spot in my heart for it.
