 No.837937>>838052 [Watch Thread][Show All Posts]

Anybody noticed this? Apparently it's installed automagically if you haven't opted-out of studies in Firefox. At first I thought it was malware but apparently it's an Easter egg for a TV show. I couldn't find any information about it except this reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/7jh9rv/what_is_looking_glass/

And by the way, what are some good alternatives to Firefox?

 No.837953

Just passing to say that, after the "Quantum" circus, "Tech sites" decided to test it and shill for it. They did all those comparisons and Firefox lost them all to the likes of Chrome, Opera and some cases even Edge.

Stop. Use palemoon or icecat or [insert your favorite meme fork of firefox here].

Firefox is untrustworthy, to hell with it.

Tell me anons because I haven't "upgraded" to 57 yet, does it still phone home to browser.selfsupport.url from about:config every now and then? Does it still have the nice UUID in toolkit.telemetry.cachedClientID? Feel free to share it btw, after all it's not personally identifiable information is it?

>And by the way, what are some good alternatives to Firefox?

Pale Moon, at least until it goes bad, which it inevitably will. If there's one /tech/ lesson to learn, it's that all software eventually rots to the point where it's obsolete, unusable and worthless.

Why did you opt in to this if you didn't want it?

>The Mr. Robot series centers around the theme of online privacy and security

For some reason I doubt they are doing a good job of this in the show.

You can find the source of the extension here: https://github.com/gregglind/addon-wr

The option says it's for studies and experiments to give the dev team feedback, not faggy ARGs. The issue is not /tech/ getting tricked into this, it's Mozilla being unprofessional and using normalfags as their little playthings.

That question was tongue in cheek. What is even more scary is that this extension was not supposed to even be user visible as in it would not appear on your about:addons page.

That sounds exactly like a feature a botnet might have, where it can silently download and execute another piece of malware.

 No.838076

On my laptop it just shits the system with 3-4 tabs. IceCat, Sea Monkey and Waterfox work great even with 30-40 tabs, with Sea Monkey being the fastest and IceCat only stuttering for a while with gifs and webm. Waterfox is also good as I am using it with too many add-ons but haven't had any problems.

 No.838080>>838126

firefug is just some corporate crapware now. you might as well use cokcok or that other russian browser i cant remember the name, which are both shitty forks with 1 or 2 added "features" of some shitty webkit shit

A reminder that Mozilla is still working on its "Information Trust Initiative" which will have the browser spy on what you're reading and interject in private conversations when it sees wrongthink.

to be honest, I ditched firecucks long ago.

>pulls gtk2 and gtk3 as dep

>shitty file picker

>dropped support to unmaintained add-ons

>have to switch off like 60 telemetry services in about:config and malform all URLs pointing to mozilla

>have to switch somerelativelynewbotnetconfig.disabled=false into "true" because they've become smarter and employ lexical circus just like how websites today can detect adblockers

>have to re-disable configs whenever updates sets it to default botnet. can't remember how many times I had to re-disable geo.*, webrtc, safebrowsing*, and more.

>have to recheck about:config every update or suffer the issue above like a retard

>one time they even added a higher tier config that will whitelist its disabled subsets of configs if unset

>can't remove dead firefox market, that hello crap, and crappy unicorn easter egg built inside

inb4 you throw the "security" and "2x speed" card here.

blackhats will always have throw-away vulnerabilities on their arsenal and they'll most of the time tell you how laughable the state of mainstream browser security had always been (this includes chromes too which is highly sought due to the market share and dumb botnet winfaggots)

For disclosure I'm samefagging from >>838052.

Yeah I noticed the enabled-to-disabled crap too. Weasels. At best it's unintentionally inconsistent. At worst they're purposely making things harder for the user.

>have to switch off like 60 telemetry services in about:config and malform all URLs pointing to mozilla

Feel free to share, I only know about browser.selfsupport.url. The other stuff is the telemetry (which is disabled anyway) and the Google safebrowsing lists. What else is Firecox connecting to?

Also in my prev post I asked about toolkit.telemetry.cachedClientID. I wonder if it's a per-install randomly generated UUID. If it is, we are being marked. Post yours, kek.

>have to recheck about:config every update or suffer the issue above like a retard

I used to think they leave your config alone, apart of course for adding brand new crap that you need to check for.
