>AMDGPU driver right in the kernel, with HDMI audio and freesync coming in the next couple versions

>NO SCREEN TEARING WHATSOEVER, no driver crashes, no kernel panics, no blacklisting, JUST WERKS

>Modern AMD motherboards are pretty much fully compatible with Linux, including suspend mode

>Performance in 3D games is nearly as fast as Windows+proprietary drivers

>No Intel IME (the PSP is bad, but not nearly as bad as IME)

>Moar cores because you're using Linux for compiling software and running VMs anyway, so it's actually useful

I'm not a "Brand wars" kind of retard, that's just corporate shill shit. But if you want modern hardware and the smoothest possible Linux experience, there's really only one choice. There's especially no excuse to use Nvidia GPUs, because the drivers are atrocious. I'm definitely going to wait and get an APU in my next laptop.

 No.830919>>831462

You're a shill, but you're right in way. Never had a problem with AMD, either the Raedon or the Ryzen, with Kubuntu. Asus, on the other hand, has been giving me headaches, especially their wireless adapter support for Linux sucks.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

So are GCN Second Gen "Sea Islands" GPUs supported officially now or are they're still stuck with the older, shittier non--AMDGPU FOSS drivers?

No, as long as you get one manufactured after the 25th week of Ryzen production, you won't get segfaults. All of the old chips have already sold out.

Screen tearing is only visible on 1080 videos and scrolling on Firefox. Tried force acceleration on Firefox, didn't notice any change.

I need to force myself to tweak X a little. Last time I tried enabling TearFree, but shit didn't boot after that. Kinda hard to force myself do deal with this shit when my Intel HD always just werks.

Yes, the Intel IGPU drivers are fine, but they're obviously not for heavy 3D stuff.

Yep, that'd do it. There's probably some setting to tweak, but I could never completely get rid of tearing on GNOME3 until Wayland dropped. Not even on Intel drivers.

I would like to know what this meme about screen tearing is about.

I've had several AMD cards and I never experienced this with proper software. The one time I experienced it was because I was using Xfce's software desktop compositor instead of a hardware compositor like compton. Once I changed it the problem was solved.

Tried it, Ubuntu 17.10s kernel already comes compiled with experimental AMDGPU support for Sea Islands GPUs. It still doesn't fucking work with APUs. I guess. Blacklisting the radeon module in grub to force the AMDGPU module to load for the GPU just results in an endless purple screen (I'm sure there's a kernel panic somewhere behind the boot splash but I'll have to check the logs later)

Fuck you AMD.
