did mac or linux have 'expose'/'mission control' first?

i haven't seen it in any DE except GNOME3, so maybe mac?

obviously windows copied the mac

KDE Plasma 5 has one.

What's expose? What's mission control?

"Good artists copy. Great artists steal" - Steve Jobs

The fact is it doesn't matter who had it first, the Mac implementation is so useless and rigid nobody cared after the marketing buzz wore off. Compiz is where it's at.

 No.829759

It was technically first with beryl or whatever the other one was called.

I think Mac had it before the major Linux DEs, but it could have been an extension for some Linux DE before then. Who knows?

 No.830015

Mac had it first. The first legitimately 100% useful addition to the desktop in ages. And then everyone on Linux fucked around with compositors and wobbly windows and spinning cubes rather than get shit done in a useful way. It wasn't until GNOME 3 that it was integrated in any sensible and useful way on Linux imo. Everything else prioritized eye candy.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

OS X came out in like 1999. Eye candy out the ass and fancy gimmick "features" such as Exposé. First version of Compiz (wobbly windows and desktop cube effects) was about 2006, which was also around the time that Vista came out. But ofc Vista's effects were bland, uninspired "m-me too!" garbage.

Gnome 3 is trash and anyone who uses it is probably part of the reason why software is in such a shit state these days, pic related.

OS X came out in 2001. Exposé wasn't added until 2003. Calling window management, accessible via the easiest to hit targets on a 2D plane, a gimmick just shows how retarded you are. You're the /tech/ equivalent of those Youtube comments from 13 year olds that lament over how the 90s were so much better.

>OS X came out in 2001.

NextSTEP came out in '89, it just wasn't ported to the Mac until 2001.
